MANSFIELD, Mass. – Darren Duncan, former standout basketball player at Merrimack, returned to his roots at Hammel Court on Saturday to be honored in a pregame ceremony – prior to the Warriors’ 76-67 win over Pace.
Duncan, a 2010 graduate of Merrimack, was recently inducted into the Northeast 10 Conference Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2018. His outstanding career, which spanned from 2006-10, resulted in over 2,000 points and made him the league’s all-time leader in free throws made.
Before tip-off, Duncan received his NE10 Hall of Fame trophy in a presentation that included conference commissioner Julie Ruppert, Merrimack Director of Athletics Jeremy Gibson and men’s basketball coach Joe Gallo.
He became the first-ever inductee from the Merrimack men’s basketball program, playing under the legendary Bert Hammel, who passed away in October. Duncan, a two-time All-American during his time in the NE10, was a Bob Cousy Award Finalist as a senior – an award annually given to the nation’s top player.
To this day, he holds school records in career assists (825), free throws made (715) and free throws attempted (918), while ranking fourth in points (2,049). He helped lead the Warriors to a pair of NCAA East Regional appearances in his last two seasons in North Andover.
The NE10 Hall of Fame Class of 2018 consisted of eight different inductees, including Duncan. Also part of the class was Erin Acone, Brandon Birchak, Shannon Arena, James Thorpe, the 2011 Saint Rose women’s soccer team, the 2013 Le Moyne men’s lacrosse team and the 2013 Southern New Hampshire men’s soccer team.
