Assumption Women's Soccer Player Gives Back Over Winter Break.
WORCESTER, Mass. – Assumption women's soccer junior Abigail Harkins (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Clearwater Central Catholic) spent her December as the most recent example of outstanding community work done by Northeast 10 Conference student-athletes and institutions. Harkins took part in a school-sanctioned SEND trip to Arbolito, Ecuador, to help others in need.
"This opportunity was truly a blessing," said Harkins. "Not only did I grow deeper in faith, but I learned the true meaning of service. I gained perspective on the world that could only be obtained through an experience like this. This trip allowed me to slow down and disconnect from a materialistic society and appreciate the beauty of simplicity."
Harkins stayed one week with the Rostro de Cristo organization of Arbolito, Ecuador, and immersed herself within the community. Every morning, she visited homes and listened to the stories of community members. In the afternoons, Harkins spent time with local children as part of an after-school program. Harkins also visited a place called the Damien House where she met people suffering from Hanson's Disease, a chronic and infectious skin disease.
SEND Service Immersion Trips are opportunities provided by Assumption to promote Catholic responsibility, faith and works of charity. SEND trips are part of the College's Campus Ministry's service and justice program that seeks to provide students with local, national and international service experiences.
