No. 3 Adelphi and No. 4 Le Moyne moved on to the NE10 Women's Tennis Semifinals with first round victories on Wednesday afternoon over Assumption and New Haven, respectively. The Panthers and Dolphins each won by 4-1 margins, earning the right to face the top two seeds in the tournament on Friday in No. 1 Stonehill and No. 2 Merrimack.
#3 Adelphi 4, #6 Assumption 1
Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team's road back to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship started with a 4-1 victory over the sixth-seeded Greyhounds of Assumption College on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Nicole Stay clinched the match for the third-seeded Panthers (10-3) at No.4 singles, delivering a 7-5, 6-2 victory to cap a match in which the Brown and Gold won or were leading at all five contested singles flights. Nicole Kielan earned a rout at No.2 singles, 6-0, 6-2, before Samantha Perri bested NE10 Player of the Year Julia Chappell in straight sets at the No.1 spot to put the Panthers one point away from the win.
Adelphi began the match by winning the doubles point against the Greyhounds (8-5) in a pair of contrasting wins.
Stay and Karen Serina teamed for a 6-1 win at the No.2 slot, before Perri and Kielan outlasted Chappell and Maria Monje at the top spot in a tiebreak.
#4 Le Moyne 4, #5 New Haven 1
DeWitt, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team registered a 4-1 win over the University of New Haven in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Wednesday afternoon at Elevate Fitness.
With the victory, the Dolphins (12-4) advance to the NE10 semifinals for the second consecutive year (and second time in the program's history) and will face top-seeded Stonehill College on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The Skyhawks defeated the Dolphins, 6-1, in the regular-season matchup on September 23.
The Dolphins won the point in the doubles competition with victories at the second and third positions. The first win of the day came at the third spot as sophomore Camila Humala (Lima, Peru/Antonio Raimondi) and freshman Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) recorded a 6-3 win over Shelby Clyne and Angela Mercurio. Sophomores Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and Caroline St. Antoine (Longueuil, Québec/Cégep Édouard-Montpetit) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the second position over Lilia Rodriguez and Nicole Mika. Senior Tiffany Hamdan (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City/Roberts Wesleyan) and freshman Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS) were leading Laura Fermosel and Stephanie Gonzalez, 5-4, at the first spot when play was stopped.
In the singles competition, Nunez gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead in the match by defeating Rodriguez at the third spot, 6-0, 6-1. Fermosel got the Chargers within 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hamdan at the top position. Oz pushed Le Moyne's lead back to two with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gonzalez at the second spot. After dropping the first set at the fourth spot, 1-6, St. Antoine rallied to defeat Mika with scores of 6-3 and 6-2 to clinch the match for the Dolphins. Freshman Belen Wibmer (Maldonado, Uruguay/St. Joseph Mary College) and Humala were leading their matches at the fifth and sixth spots when the match was decided.
