Embrace the Victory: Three of Top Four Seeds Advance to NE10 Women's Soccer Semifinals

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

Three of the top four seeds advanced to the NE10 Women's Soccer Semifinals after victories on Tuesday, including No. 1 Franklin Pierce and No. 2 Southern New Hampshire. The sole upset of the day came from a win by No. 6 Assumption over No. 3 Stonehill. For all the results from the Quarterfinal Round, see below.

#1 Franklin Pierce 5, #8 American International 1

RINDGE, N.H. – The No. 8 nationally-ranked and no. 1 seeded Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team dominated the no. 8 seed American International College Yellow Jackets to the tune of a season-best five goals in a 5-1 win Tuesday evening on Sodexo Field during the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals. Junior forward Veronica Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tallied two goals and one assist on four total shots in the Raven victory.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 13-1-2 overall and advance to the NE10 Semifinals on Friday. Franklin Pierce will host the no. 4 seeded College of Saint Rose Golden Knights at Sodexo Field with kick off slated for 7:00 p.m. The winner of that match will move on to the NE10 Championship Game Sunday. AIC ends their 2018 campaign at 9-9-1.

Marques helped push the Ravens ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute of play. The junior smoked a cross on the ground from the right post to the left side which was corralled by Raven junior forward Sophie Cousineau (Milton, Mass.). Cousineau corralled the ball and punched in a shot attempt to the left part of the net.

A couple of seconds later, a foul was called on the Ravens in the box. A penalty kick was awarded to the Yellow Jackets and senior midfielder Federica Frew took the chance. Frew walked in and ripped a shot right side of the cage past diving goalkeeper Casey Kane (Millis, Mass.). That was the only blemish on Kane's night as she made two saves for her 10th win of the season.

#2 Southern New Hampshire 2, #7 Southern Conn. State 1 (2OT)

Junior Shae Roys (No. Billerica, Mass.) found the back of the net in the 106th minute to lift the 23rd-ranked and second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory against seventh-seeded Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinal tilt at Penmen Stadium on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern New Hampshire struck first in the 14th minute off an absolutely splendid feed from senior Danielle Humphreys(Hebron, Conn.), who sent a long pass from deep on the left flank through a pair of Southern Connecticut defenders and directly to the foot of Carney in the box. Carney dribbled in toward the 6-yard box and easily beat the goalkeeper to deposit the ball in the back right corner of the net.
  • The score remained 1-0 into the second half when Southern Connecticut looked to have the equalizer in the 59th minute, but Olivia Holubecki's goal was waved off, as it came off an indirect kick and never touched another player before sailing into the top left corner of the net.
  • The Penmen nearly doubled their lead in the 74th minute when freshman Dorthea Glorud (Brumunddal, Norway) delivered a centering pass from the left end line right into the middle of the box for Roys, but her blast was gobbled up by SCSU goalkeeper Abigail Allen.
  • The Owls would tie it just over a minute-and-a-half later when they were awarded a penalty kick that Johanna Wahlen connected on to even the score at 1-all.
  • The Penmen nearly scored a back-breaker late in the 88th minute when senior Jenna Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) delivered a perfect corner service into the box, where Carney put a head on it, but the ball caromed off the crossbar to keep it tied.
  • Southern Connecticut provided a scare for SNHU in the 95th minute when a free kick bounced around in the box before Kaitlyn D'Amico put a foot on the ball and sent it rolling toward the right post, with freshman goalkeeper Hannah Rose (Waterloo, Ontario) racing over to meet it, but it rolled just wide.
  • Southern New Hampshire had a golden opportunity just over a minute into the second overtime when Fitzgerald dribbled in alone near the right post, but a Southern Connecticut defender seemingly came out of nowhere with a slide tackle to break up the chance.
  • The Penmen finally advanced with 4:45 remaining in the second extra session with a near exact replica of their 74th-minute chance, as Glorud carried the ball into the left side of the box and fed it to the middle for Roys, who drilled it into the left side of the net.

 #6 Assumption 2, #3 Stonehill 1

THE BASICS:

- Score: Assumption 2, Stonehill 1

- Records: Assumption (10-6-2), Stonehill (13-6)

- Location: Easton, Mass. (W.B. Mason Stadium)

- The Lead: No. 6 seed Assumption gave up a goal in the first minute of the contest, but battled back to tie the game and eventually took the lead, ousting No. 3 seed Stonehill in the NE10 Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Stonehill got on the board in the opening minute, scoring off a corner kick just 50 seconds into the game. The initial shot was saved by Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy), but Kayla Henry finished off the rebound in front.

- Assumption kept up the pressure and finally broke through in the 31st minute. Brooke Shatney (Weare, N.H. / John Stark) possessed the ball outside the box, took a touch and ripped a shot from 30 yards out into the upper corner of the net, past a diving Kaitlin Brown to even score.

- The Hounds nearly took a 2-1 lead in the final five minutes of the first. Shatney fired another hard shot past the diving Brown, but this one clanged off the right post. The ball bounced back out to Ania Spina (Wallingford, Conn. / Mark T. Sheehan) and she tried to put it on net, but it went off the right post, keeping the score 1-1.

Kallie Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) finally gave the Hounds the 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute. The senior received a pass from Diana Bruggeman (Natick, Mass. / Natick) at the top of the 18 and with a defender on her back, turned toward the net and fired a left footed shot past a diving Brown for the 2-1 advantage.

- Stonehill had a few chances in the final 20 minutes, but Nason and the Hound defense held strong while the offense continued to pressure the Skyhawks.

#4 Saint Rose 5, #5 Saint Anselm 0

ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose put itself in the catbird seat at the outset and never looked back on the way to a 5-0 victory against visiting Saint Anselm in today's Northeast-10 Conference Championship Quarterfinal. In the process, the fourth-seed Golden Knights (13-3-3) avenged a 2-1 setback to the fifth-seed Hawks (9-7-1) two weeks ago in Manchester, N.H.

Saint Rose will now visit Franklin Pierce for a 7:00 pm semifinal match on Friday in Rindge, N.H. The top-seed Ravens advanced with tonight's 5-1 win against visiting American International.

Senior midfielder Julianne Johnston found the back of the net three times, while junior midfielder Caitlyn Dabagian set up Johnston's second strike and finished herself to close out the scoring. Meanwhile, junior keeper Marika Laurendeau registered seven saves to record her ninth clean sheet this autumn.
