New Hyde Park, N.Y. - The Adelphi women's soccer team served this holiday season in more ways than one, adding another example of the Northeast 10 Conference's commitment to serving its local communities. 

On Dec. 5, 11 members of the Panthers, which included nine players and assistant coaches Katherine Mendez and Jeanine Nunez, prepared and served meals for 70 people at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.

The team arrived ahead of dinner at 6 p.m. and prepared a full meal, which included pasta, chicken, vegetables and dessert, for those gathered.

Pictured above are Erica Bleimeyer, Madison Raposo, Cady Houghton, Mia York, Krista Aliscio, Kerianne Scorce, Jacklyn Lada, Jacqueline Diffley and Sarah Hofmeier, along with Mendez and Nunez.

"The Ronald McDonald House is a really great organization. You might not necessarily think about all that they help do, but a lot of the routine and day-to-day things that we take for granted can get lost in the shuffle when you're caring for a sick child," Scorce said.

"We went ahead and bought all the supplies ourselves, and it was a humbling experience for us to play even a small part in helping out these families." 

Since opening in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island has served approximately 30,000 families from Long Island, throughout the United States and abroad.

A majority of these families are from the New York metropolitan area as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the organization's mission is to keep families with sick children both close to each other and to vital care and resources.

Over 80 percent of residents have children who are being treated at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York - formerly Schneider Children's Hospital - also in New Hyde Park.
