Owls Claim 14th Title in Program History; Skyhawks Win Record Sixth-Straight League Championship.
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut men and Stonehill women's programs won the 2019 Northeast 10 Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship on Sunday at Smith College - holding onto their respective leads after day one and cruising to victory. It is the third-straight win for the Owls and 14th league title in program history, while the Skyhawks won their record sixth-straight NE10 championship.
Owls Win Third-Straight NE10 Indoor Track & Field Championship
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's indoor track and field claimed the 2019 Northeast 10 Indoor Track and Field Championship for the third-consecutive year and 14th time in program history. The Owls soared to victory with 215 points, ahead of American International College (96) and Stonehill College (89.50).
Field Event Highlights
Senior Turner Kelly (Amityville, N.Y.) was deemed the NE10 Field Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row for his performances throughout the championships. He took the top spot on the podium in the shot put for the second year in a row with an NCAA Division II provisional marker of 16.53 meters, which was over one meter further than the second-place finisher. He previously took second place in the weight throw in day one of the championships with a toss of 18.09 meters, also an NCAA DII provisional marker.
Oghenfejiro Onakpoma (Naugatuck, Conn.) claimed the triple jump crown with a leap of 15.43 meters. Freshman Elijah Henry (Stratford, Conn.) took the third spot on the podium with a jump of 13.86 meters.
Freshman Bernardo Mbaya (Waterbury, Conn.) took fifth place in the shot put at his first indoor championship with a toss of 14.32 meters, while sophomore Darius Williams (East Hartford, Conn.) took 10th with a 13.66-meter toss.
Heptathlon Highlights
Philip Quaye took the pentathlon crown for the second-straight year, eclipsing his own personal best and the conference record, he previously set at the 2018 NE10 championships in the process. Quaye finished with 3788 points, an NCAA Division II provisional marker.
Freshmen Daniel Brown, Joshua Prouty and Shane Smith and senior Hunter Stokes also competed finishing fifth (4506), seventh (4394), eighth (4281) and 10th (4121).
Track Event Highlights
Southern crowded the podium in the 3000-meter run as they occupied all three of the top spots. Sophomore Christopher LeBeau (Bristol, Conn.), who was the NE10 Rookie of the Year for Cross Country, claimed the NE10 Championship crown with a time of 8:43.98. Freshman Jake Mattei (Bethany, Conn.) took silver with a time of 8:50.24 and sophomore Gavin Woodward took bronze with a time of 8:53.84. Freshman Stephen Fengler (Wallingford, Conn.) also competed, taking fifth place with a time of 8:59.23.
Sophomore Terrell Patterson (Waterbury, Conn.) claimed bronze in the one mile run with a time of 4:11.30, while Steven Cugini (Milford, Conn.) finished behind him in fourth with a time of 4:21.20.
The Owls occupied the top eight standings in the 60-meter dash as Nigel Green (Shirley, N.Y.) finished third on the podium with a time 7.04 seconds, while senior Royale Jamison (Bronx, N.Y.) finished fourth with a time of 7.10, freshman Naszi Torrence-Robinson (New Haven, Conn.) placed fifth with a time of 7.13 and freshman Isaiah Brooks (East Hartford, Conn.) took sixth with a time 7.15 seconds.
Junior Sachin Manning (New Haven, Conn.) took sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.54 seconds.
Green also competed in the 200-meter dash where he took another bronze with a time of 22.19 seconds. Freshman Elijah Henry (Stratford, Conn.) also competed and took home fifth-place with a time 22.24.
Freshman Aren Seeger (Naugatuck, Conn.) and junior John Witik (Wallingford, Conn.) competed in the 60-meter hurdles where they took sixth (8.68) and eighth (8.77), respectively.
The quartet consisting of Seeger, Naji Middleton (West Hartford, Conn.), Trinity Collins (Middletown, Conn.) and Manning took third place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.63.
Junior Troy Stegman (Wethersfield, Conn.) was recognized with Elite "24" award, given by the conference to the student- athlete with the highest grade-point-average at the championship.
Stonehill Captures Sixth-Straight NE10 Title
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Stonehill College women's track and field team, ranked No. 1 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II East Regional Computer Rankings and 88th in the Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index earned their sixth-straight Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship Sunday afternoon at Smith College Indoor Track Facility.
The women's squad totaled 166 points and 17 total All-Conference nods, with 12 All-Conference on day two, for their sixth-straight NE10 Indoor Championship, while Assumption College combined for 120 points and finished second in the Conference. Southern Connecticut State University placed third with 68 points, while American International College (62 points) and the College of Saint Rose (54 points) rounded out the top five teams.
With the program's sixth-straight NE10 Indoor Track and Field Championship under their belt, the Skyhawks have also won 11-straight Championships including cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field. Over the past 17 NE10 Championships, Stonehill women have won 16.
Krista Fernandes captured her first-career individual NE10 Championship as she clocked in a time of 57.84-seconds in the 400-meter run. Fernandes also qualified for the 60-meter hurdles, finishing eighth in the finals on day two. The senior contributed to the 4x400-meter relay team to bring her total to eight All-Conference honors in her career, with a third place finish.
After finishing first in the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash, Olivia Dexter finished second overall with a time of 7.63-seconds. The senior saw her second All-Conference recognition of the day after finishing third in the 200-meter final with a time of 25.27-seconds. This brings her career total to 15 NE10 All-Conference honors.
Jillian Caiazzi earned her 13th All-Conference honor with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run, clocking in a time of 2:18.42. Alyssa Freeman followed the senior with a time of 2:19.70 for her eighth-career All-Conference honor and a third-place finish. Kelly Higgins placed fifth to assist the Skyhawks in team points clocking in at a career best time of 2:22.21.
Anna Lastra totaled her 13th All-Conference honor in her career with a runner-up mark in the mile running the event in 5:06.50. Sophomore Jillian Howard followed behind with her in third place with her second All-Conference recognition crossing the finish line in a career best time of 5:14.03. Isabella Kennedy was the Skyhawks' final runner in the mile event, earning herself a top-10 mark with a 10th-place finish and a career best time of 5:26.92.
Sophomore Sophia Anderle made her way through the pack as she posted a second-place finish in the 3000-meter run for her third All-Conference honor and a career best time of 10:21.86. Siobhan O'Keefe placed seventh with a career best time of 10:40.43.
Stonehill saw four women earn points in the 60-meter hurdles final including Zoe Smith, Savanna Macaluso, Casey Gannon, and Fernandes. After breaking the previous school record yesterday, Smith finished second with a time of 8.95-seconds for her first All-Conference honor. Macaluso placed sixth overall with her career best time of 9.29-seconds, as Gannon followed in seventh with her time of 9.35-seconds.
The 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Gannon, Ashley Colarusso, Claire Hurtado, and Fernandes clocked in a time of 4:03.30 adding to the Skyhawks' All-Conference total. The 4x800-meter relay team consisting of Howard, Claire Mason, Lastra, and Higgins also finished third with the anchor leg crossing the finish line at 9:43.82 for the relays' third All-Conference recognition in the two-day event.
Madison Ward earned the only All-Conference honor for the high jump squad with her mark of 5 feet, 5.25 inches, finishing third out of 21 competitors totaling her second-career All-Conference nod. Jessydoris Iwuala and Kathleen Giusti tied for fifth with a mark of 5 feet, 3.25 inches.
Shayla Lyons and Elizabeth Balzarini competed their second event of weekend, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Lyons tossed the shot put a distance of 40 feet, 7.50 inches, while Balzarini hit a career best mark of 40 feet, 6.75 inches. Krista Stracqualursi rounded out the top-10 with a career best measurement of 37 feet, 9.25 inches.
