MANSFIELD, Mass. - National Girls & Women in Sports Day has been more than just one day, as Northeast 10 schools have been celebrating the initiative all week with various activities to promote and empower females to take advantage of physical activity and push past their limits, both in sports and life. This year's theme is "Lead Her Forward", which is a way to honor the many ways that sports push girls and women to achieve excellence in all facets of life.

Several NE10 institutions have taken part in NGWSD events - including Adelphi - which hosted an activity day this past Saturday on campus with approximately 50 local female athletes, administrators, coaches and Panthers' athletes present.

A day that is recognized worldwide, NGWSD began in 1987 as a special day in Washington, D.C. to recognize women's sports. The day united premiere organizations and elite female athletes to bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports.

With stations set up throughout the Center for Recreation and Sport (CRS), attendees, who ranged in age from 8-12, had the opportunity to try out a handful of different sports and interact with the Adelphi female athletes in attendance.

"I am proud to have had the opportunity to volunteer and represent my team at the activity day," said sophomore track and field athlete Jenna Piller. "Being a student-athlete has taught me so much about character, integrity, and resiliency, and to remain steadfast in my values. The challenges and achievements you share with your teammates and coaches provide valuable lessons about determination and grit."

The participants were also exposed to a station featuring assistant women's soccer coach Amanda Ferranti, who offered a workshop about mental skills in sports and how important character is as female athletes.

Sophomore volleyball player Cara McKenzie and Kerianne Scorce, a junior on the women's soccer team, spoke in front of the group, sharing obstacles they've overcome to be able to be successful in their respective sports.

Added Piller: "It was refreshing to watch the enthusiasm of the young girls that participated, and a rewarding experience to contribute to a path that will provide them the tools to become strong, confident leaders."
