Adelphi Participates in Read Across America Day

Read Across America - 2023

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - On a day that promotes a nationwide celebration of reading, the Adelphi University Department of Athletics made visits to two classrooms at local elementary schools for Read Across America Day on Thursday, March 2.

Read Across America Day occurs annually every March 2 on Dr. Seuss' birthday, to spread awareness on diversity and inclusion, and encourage children across the country to read.

As Adelphi strives to be a model of diversity and inclusion, Dr. Seuss envisioned a world in which all people, animals, and the environment are valued and thriving.

Several student-athletes from different Adelphi teams took part in Dr. Seuss read-alongs at the Prospect School and David Paterson School in Hempstead, in celebration of Read Across America.

What Our Student-Athletes Had to Say About the Experience:
Justin Forest, Men's Basketball: "I really enjoyed reading to the kids. I had them read along with me and they even made me a basketball hoop. It put a smile on my face to start the day."

Lauren Hammersley, Women's Basketball: "Having the opportunity to go into a classroom and read with the kids on Read Across America Day was a great feeling. Seeing how happy all of the students were throughout the read and after was touching because it made me realize that the love I had as a student for reading is still prominent in schools today."

Christopher Holt, Track & Field: "Going back to my school district and reading to today's youth was extremely cathartic. I'm only 20 years down in the road of life and it felt great to interact with the kids and give them the inspiration to be successful through reading. They are the leaders of tomorrow and, as young as I am, I hold responsibility to steer youth in the right direction."

Courtney Murphy, Softball: "Being able to read to elementary school students was really inspiring. It was so nice to have the opportunity to interact with the students right within our community. As an aspiring teacher myself, it was a super fun day and great experience getting into the classroom to read to future generations."
