Embrace the Community: NE10 Schools Celebrating You Can Play Initiative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Adelphi, Saint Michael's Hold Pride Events for All-Inclusive Sport Environment.

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Adelphi and Saint Michael’s are just a couple of the institutions in the Northeast 10 Conference and across the country to celebrate the You Can Play initiative – a cause that promotes the inclusion of the LGBTQ community in sports.

You Can Play, an organization based out of Denver, Col., works to guarantee that athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete only by what they contribute to the sport and their team’s success. It works to ensure the safety and inclusion of all in sports – with an emphasis on LGBTQ athletes, coaches and fans.

Coming up in short order, the Panthers will be hosting “Pride at the Park” in conjunction with a softball doubleheader against Southern Connecticut on Tuesday, April 9. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive an Adelphi pride t-shirt, featuring the athletics logo in rainbow colors.

"We're excited and honored to have this event debut at our games,” said Adelphi softball head coach Carla Campagna. “It is important for us, as a team and as an athletic department, to be welcoming to all, and this event is a great opportunity for us to do that."

This past winter, Saint Michael’s drew inspiration from the You Can Play Project for its “Pride Games” – with men’s basketball, women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey participating in the initiative. Basketball players wore rainbow shoe laces and warm-up shirts featuring a rainbow knight head on the Saint Michael’s logo.

The Purple Knights’ hockey team held a “Hockey is for Everyone Pride Game” back in January, mirroring the NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone month that supports “a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.”
