NE-10 Announces Scholar-Athlete Award Finalists

Winners to be honored at year-end banquet

MANSFIELD, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference has announced the finalists for its Male and Female Outstanding Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards. The winners will be announced and honored at the NE-10 annual banquet on Monday, June 1 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The finalists for the Male Scholar-Athlete accolade are Assumption College’s Brennen Shaw (ice hockey), Merrimack College’s Vince Bellino (tennis) and Stonehill College’s Bryan Wilcox (cross country/track & field).

The Female Outstanding Scholar-Athlete finalists are Assumption College’s Abigail Heroth (field hockey), Le Moyne College’s Alex Marple (basketball) and the College of Saint Rose’s Carmelina Puopolo (soccer).

Captain of the Greyhounds’ ice hockey team, Shaw has a 3.95 GPA as a business management/finance major. A two-time NE-10 Ice Hockey Sport Excellence Award winner, Shaw collected 12 points on seven goals and five assists in 24 games this season.

Bellino, a business administration major with a concentration in finance and minor in Political Philosophy, boasts a 3.978 GPA. He was a first team all-conference choice this season for the Warriors and was a member of three NE-10 Championship teams.

Wilcox is an accounting major with a 3.71 GPA who has collected a large handful of national academic honors during his time with the Skyhawks. He has earned all-conference honors in cross country and outdoor track & field, while helping Stonehill to three NE-10 Cross Country Championships. 

Heroth, a double major in biotechnology and molecular biology with a GPA of 3.94, was honored with the NE-10 Field Hockey Sport Excellence Award two years in a row. As Assumption’s team captain, she led the Greyhounds to their first conference tournament appearance since 2002.

Marple, who has a 3.711 GPA while majoring in physics, is a two-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference selection. On the court, Marple was a first team all-conference choice while guiding the Dolphins to the NE-10 Championship quarterfinals in each of her last two seasons. 

A two-time Capitol One Academic All-American, Puopolo has a 3.52 GPA as a special education - childhood education major. She has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America first team three times and has twice earned National Player of the Year accolades.
