Current Director of Athletics at Johnson & Wales Brings More than 20 Years of Experience in Intercollegiate Athletics
WORCESTER, Mass. - Assumption President Francesco C. Cesareo, Ph.D., has announced the appointment of Jamie P. Marcoux, M.S., LATC, as the College's fifth director of athletics in its 114-year history. In this role, Marcoux will provide leadership for a comprehensive athletic program that appeals to a wide range of intercollegiate student-athletes and serves to enhance students' liberal arts education by promoting physical fitness, sportsmanship, and socialization in support of the mission of the College. Marcoux assumes her new duties on June 4.
Currently the director of athletics at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., Marcoux manages 500 student-athletes, a full-time staff of 30 and 23 Division III varsity programs and all recreation, fitness and intramural programs. Marcoux earned a bachelor's of science in community health education and athletic training from Rhode Island College and a master's of science in athletic training from Indiana State University.

"Jamie's extensive experience will enhance the student-athlete experience at Assumption and provide to them greater opportunities. Having served in a number of athletics' positions in a university environment, Jamie knows the importance of a well-managed and highly competitive Division II athletics program with regard to recruiting new students to the College."

While at Johnson & Wales, Marcoux contributed to the development and execution of a strategic plan that has enhanced the University's athletics program. The enhancements include the construction of new baseball and softball fields, as well as a multi-purpose turf field; the upgrade of the indoor practice facility with locker rooms and concessions; full-time coaches and the addition of six varsity programs including men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey, women's ice hockey, women's rowing and women's golf.
As Assumption's director of athletics, Marcoux will be responsible for implementing key priorities as they relate to the athletics program in the College's Light the Way 2020: Building on Foundations of Excellence Strategic Plan. These priorities include the development of plans to maximize the utilization of existing athletics facilities as well as explore the feasibility of the development of new facilities. The strategic plan emphasizes the need to ensure that student-athletes excel on the field and in the classroom.
Over the past five years, Marcoux has established Johnson & Wales as a top athletic department in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and one of the finest in New England among Division III schools. The men's athletic teams have won three of the past four GNAC Commissioner's Cups, while the women's athletic teams have won two of the past four. During the 2017-18 academic year alone, seven different programs have claimed GNAC Championships. Additionally, the nationally ranked wrestling program took sixth at the NCAA Division III National Championships and the volleyball program concluded the year ranked sixth in the nation after reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Prior to her appointment as director of athletics at Johnson & Wales, Marcoux served as associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator from 2002-2013. She began her service at Johnson & Wales as the head athletic trainer. In addition to her vast administrative credentials, Marcoux also served as head coach for the University's volleyball team from 1996 to 2010. As coach, she led the team to five GNAC Conference Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. Marcoux was recognized for her success by being named the GNAC Coach of the Year on seven occasions and currently volunteers as a volleyball coach for youth 14-years-old and younger.
Marcoux is serving or has served for a number of organizations, including the National Association of Athletic Administrators, Division III; Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (president 2006-2007); National Association for Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators; National Athletic Trainers' Association; Rhode Island Athletic Trainers' Association; NCAA Women's Volleyball Regional Committee member; Eastern College Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Committee member; American Volleyball Coaches Association Head Coaches' Committee member; and Great Northeast Athletic Conference's Women's Volleyball Committee member, sports chair for women's field hockey and chair of the executive committee.
While a student-athlete at Rhode Island College, Marcoux was named Rhode Island College NCAA Woman of the Year; to the Who's Who Among College Students list; and earned the Rhode Island College Health, Physical Education Department Senior Faculty Award.
