While Ed Steitz enters the NE-10 Hall of Fame as a founding father of the conference, his contributions to the game of basketball could make him an honorary father of the game as well. He began his career as coach of the college's basketball program in 1956, the same year he was named Athletics Director. While he stepped down from coaching in 1966, he remained the AD until 1990.

Ed was recognized worldwide as the leading authority on amateur basketball rules. As secretary, editor and national interpreter of the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee from 1965 to 1990, Steitz was instrumental in shaping many new changes to the game.

His basketball contributions are further evidenced as the founding father and past president of the ABA/USA (now USA Basketball), the governing body for amateur basketball in the United States. In a long and dedicated career, Steitz served as chairman of the U.S. Olympic official selection committee from 1964 to 1980 and served in an official capacity at eight different Olympiads. A charter trustee and member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, he served as the first secretary for 17 years.

His vision and influence in creating the NE-10 will be forever appreciated.
