New Haven to Host Championship Weekend

Dominant pitching performances were the story of the opening round of the Northeast-10 Baseball Championship as three of the four higher seeds posted wins to advance to the upcoming championship weekend. Because of Tuesday's results, New Haven will host the upcoming championship weekend. Here's how the action played out - 

#1 NE Southern New Hampshire 2, #4 NE Bentley 1, Final - 10 Innings | BOXSCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Junior righthander Mitchell Powers threw a 10-inning one-hitter in leading the Penmen to a thrilling walk-off win in the 10th inning. Powers struck out 13 in the win, his fifth of the season. The only hit he allowed was a solo shot to Bentley's Max Troiani in the 4th inning.

Southern New Hampshire would tie the game in the 6th courtesy of an RBI double by Kyle Pangallo and the teams would remain tied at one after nine. In the home half of the tenth, SNHU's Zach Goldstein punched a one-out triple down the right field line and would score the game-winner thanks to an RBI single by Derek Bauer to end it.

With the win, the Penmen advance to Championship Weekend, hosted by New Haven, where they will look to defend their NE10 title.

#2 NE Franklin Pierce 8, #3 NE Merrimack 0 | BOXSCORE

RINDGE, N.H. - Four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning for the Ravens would prove to be all Franklin Pierce would need en route to their 8-0 First Round win earlier tonight. The Ravens would go on to add a pair of runs in the 5th, and two more in the 6th in the victory.

Seven different Ravens recorded at least one hit in the win, while starting pitcher Cody McPartland threw 7.2 scoreless innings for the winners. McPartland allowed just six hits and struck out six Merrimack hitters. Dylan Jones had a pair of RBI for Franklin Pierce, while Adam Chase and John Friday each scored two runs in the win. 

The Ravens advance to NE10 Championship Weekend with hopes of winning their sixth conference baseball championship.

#2 SW New Haven 3, #3 SW Le Moyne 0 | BOXSCORE





WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Behind a stellar pitching performance from junior David Palmer, New Haven (26-10) shutout Le Moyne 3-0 to advance to NE10 Championship weekend. By virtue of Pace defeating Southern Connecticut in the other Southwest Division First Round game, New Haven has won hosting rights for Championship Weekend. A complete weekend schedule will be posted as soon as it is available.

Palmer, who improved to 7-0 on the season, threw seven scoreless innings, stranding six runners on base. Overall the righty allowed six hits but did not issue a free pass. He also struck out a career-high 10 batters. Closing out the victory for New Haven was lefthander Kellen Croce who struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his sixth save. Lefty Josh Walker also pitched a relief inning for New Haven, striking out a pair.

At the plate, right fielder Nick Perrelli led the Blue and Gold bats with a pair of the five total hits for New Haven. He also drove in a run and scored once. Centerfielder Matt Chamberlain and third baseman Jack Zagaja also had an RBI on the day with Zagaja's coming on a sacrifice and Chamberlain's on a double to left center. 

#4 SW Pace 5, #1 SW Southern Connecticut 2 | BOXSCORE

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After winning 2-of-3 against the same opponent this past weekend, the Southwest Division No. 4-seed Pace traveled back to Southern Connecticut for their fourth game in four days on Tuesday, and took down the Southwest Division's top seed in the NE10 First Round by a score of 5-2, eliminating the Owls and sending the Setters to NE10 Championship Weekend for the second straight season.

Junior starter Ryan Aquino tossed a complete game, striking out a career-high nine batters while allowing just two runs on seven hits to earn the biggest win of his career to date.

Pace now heads to NE10 Championship Weekend, which will be hosted by Southwest No. 2 University of New Haven as the highest remaining seed in the Southwest Division. The three-day weekend begins on Thursday, May 11.
