WALTHAM, Mass. – After 28 years on the coaching staff, the last five as head coach, Bentley University football coach Thom Boerman will retire as of November 30, 2013, Director of Athletics Bob DeFelice announced.

"This was a very difficult decision," said Boerman. "After nearly 30 years of coaching football at Bentley, I felt I needed a change. I hope to spend some time with my family and see what new challenges I may be able to pursue.

"Being a head football coach at an excellent academic school like Bentley has truly been an honor. It has been my life and I think I am leaving the program in good shape for the next person who takes over."

During his five years as head coach, Boerman directed the Falcons to a 33-17 record, including 6-5 this past season, the program's 23rd winning record in 26 varsity seasons. His tenure featured a pair of 8-2 records, in 2009 and 2012, and a share of the Northeast-10 Conference championships in 2009 and 2010.

Boerman was named the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year following the 2009 season and recently received the Murray Lewis Award from the Boston Chapter of the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Football Officials.

"The best part of being a coach here for so long is the relationships I have developed, the young men I had the privilege of coaching, the men I coached with and the faculty and staff at Bentley that helped me make our program one of the best performing teams on and off the field and in the classroom. You could not find a better place to coach," concluded Boerman.

Boerman was elevated to head coach December 8, 2008 following more than two decades as an assistant coach, including ten as Director of Football Operations. He came to Bentley in 1986 and spent most of his tenure as an assistant working with the defensive backs before serving as the Defensive Coordinator in 2008.

The Falcons, in addition to success on the field, prospered in the classroom under Boerman's leadership. They won the Northeast-10 Team Excellence Award for football annually from 2009-11, and ten players combined for 15 Academic All-Conference awards from 2009-12 (this year's honorees won't be announced until after the first of the year).
