MANSFIELD, Mass. – Assumption senior kicker Cole Tracy has been named the winner of the 2017 Fred Mitchell Award, which honors the top placekicker in the FCS, Division II, Division II and the NJCAA for excellence on the field and in the community.
Tracy put together a recording-breaking 2017 campaign on his way to winning the highest award for a non-FBS kicker. The senior led all kickers and ranked third in the nation with 148 points, which is the second-highest total ever in a single season. He finished the year a perfect 67-for-67 on extra point attempts and made 27 of 29 field goals, with his only misses from 45 and 52 yards. Tracy's 27 field goals is tied for the second-most ever by a Division II kicker in a single season, while his points per game (11.4) for a kicker is an NCAA Division II record.
In addition to his impressive season statistics, Tracy concludes his Assumption career with 68 field goals, which is the second most in NCAA Division II history. He owns the NCAA Division II record for points in a game with 21, which he set in 2016 against Saint Anselm, while his six field goals in that contest tied the NCAA Division II record. He is the only kicker in NCAA Division II history with multiple 20-point game and also the only with multiple six-field goal games.
Off the field, Tracy is vice president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Assumption. He has been a part of numerous community service initiatives through SAAC, as well as with the Assumption football team which prides itself on completing various community service activities during the year. Tracy was already named an AFCA All-American this year, as well as the NE10 Special Teams Player of the Year and was CCA All-Region selection.
This marks the second straight year a Division II kicker has won the award, as Matt Davis of UNC Pembroke earned the honor a season ago. The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the All-American place-kicker from Wittenberg University and sports columnist for the Chicago Tribune for 41 years.
