No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas & No. 5 Assumption Earn NE10 Quarterfinal Victories 


MANSFIELD, Mass. - Seventh seed St. Thomas Aquinas took down No. 2 Adelphi 1-0 in double overtime while fifth seed Assumption captured a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Stonehill to highlight a pair of upsets in the Northeast-10 Field Hockey Quarterfinals on Tuesday. Top seed Saint Anselm and No. 3 Southern New Hampshire each won to earn the right to host NE10 Semifinal contests on Friday.

The No. 7 Spartans will travel to face Southern New Hampshire on Friday evening at 6 p.m., while Saint Anselm will host Assumption at 4 p.m. in NE10 Semifinal action.


No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas 2, No. 2 Adelphi 1 (2OT) - Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - St. Thomas Aquinas earned its first-ever NE10 Tournament victory taking down second seed Adelphi 1-0 in double overtime on the road Tuesday evening in the NE10 Quarterfinals. 

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute, but the Spartans answered back ten minutes later to tie the game up with less than ten minutes remaining in regulation. Neither team scored through the end of regulation or the first overtime. Briannah Thorne provided the game-winner with less than two minutes in the second overtime as she took a pass at the top of the shooting circle and blasted a shot into the bottom corner of the cage to provide the upset victory. The Spartans were making their first NE10 Tournament appearance after joining the conference prior to this season. 


No. 5 Assumption 1, No. 4 Stonehill 0 - Box Score

EASTON, Mass. - Assumption scored in the first quarter and then held on the remainder of the game to earn a 1-0 upset victory and solidify their way into the NE10 Semifinals on Friday. 

The game was scoreless through the first ten minutes. Assumption secured their first penalty corner of the game when Courtney Sickel hit a hard shot at the goalie that she saved, but Deirdre Burchill picked up the rebound and lifted the ball up and over the goalie and into the new for a 1-0 lead headed into the second quarter. Stonehill fought back in the fourth quarter as the Skyhawks recorded four shots and two penalty corners while the Hounds earned no shots or penalty corners. However, Assumption held on for the win. 

Kylie Gargiulo earned her fifteenth win of the season with one save while Katie Lammando of the Skyhawks recorded six saves. The Hounds outshot the Skyhawks 15-6 and earned three more penalty corners than Stonehill (7-4) as they advanced to the NE10 Semifinals for the third straight season. 


No. 1 Saint Anselm 2, No. 8 Franklin Pierce 0 - Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm College field hockey program picked up a 2-0 victory over Franklin Pierce University in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday at Grappone Stadium.

The top-seeded and nationally-ranked Hawks posted their 17th shutout of the 2019 campaign, improving to 17-2 overall. Franklin Pierce, the No. 8 seed in the NE10 postseason, sees its season come to a close with an 8-11 overall record. The Hawks, ranked third in NCAA Division II, did not allow a single shot attempt against for the third time this year, finishing with a 19-0 advantage on Tuesday.

Junior Julia Hand earned the shutout, not facing any shots in 60 minutes of action. Senior Michelle Lemelin put Saint Anselm ahead by a 1-0 score at 23:55 and freshman Avery Tucker logged her first career goal via a penalty stroke in the game's 54th minute, adding insurance down the stretch. The Hawks look for their second straight trip to the NE10 Championship when they host Assumption on Friday. 


No. 3 Southern New Hampshire 2, No. 6 Bentley 1 - Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Junior Hélène Servais drilled home her 13th goal of the season 1:03 into double-overtime to lift third-seeded and sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University to a 2-1 victory over sixth-seeded Bentley University in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Championship. 

Sophomore Cameron Whelan punched in her fourth goal of the season with 2:21 left to play in the first half to draw the Penmen even after the Falcons took a lead late in the first quarter. Less than a minute into the second overtime, on the final of three consecutive penalty corners, senior Laura van der Doorn inserted a pass into Servais, who wound up and unloaded a shot to the bottom right corner that sent the Penmen to their first NE10 Semifinal.
