GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - James Sweeney has been chosen to lead the Adelphi women's golf team as the second head coach in program history, announced by Director of Athletics and Recreation Danny McCabe earlier this week.

"We are thrilled to welcome James to the Adelphi Panther family," McCabe said. "His passion for golf and knowledge of the game will be a big asset to our student-athletes. I look forward to seeing the team's progress on the course and in the classroom under his leadership."

Sweeney has a background in finance after an extensive career spanning over 20 years working on Wall Street. He spent 20 years on the New York Stock Exchange before turning his attention to his family and golf. He graduated in 1992 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Canisius College.

The Garden City, N.Y. native was elected to the Board of Directors at Hempstead Golf and Country Club, playing a vital role in overseeing golf operations and transforming it into the preeminent place for family golf on the South Shore.

"I am passionate about coaching and about the game of golf so this was the perfect opportunity for me," commented Sweeney. "Not only am I excited to join nationally acclaimed university but also join an athletic department that has a culture of winning. This position presents a chance to help build a program still in its infancy and lay the foundation brick-by-brick."

When he is not coaching golf, Sweeney is actively involved in local youth sports having coached baseball and basketball at many different levels. He currently resides in Garden City with his wife, Kathleen and four children.
