Top Seeds All Advance to NE10 Semifinals
The top two seeds in the Northeast and Southwest Divisions Each Advanced to the Semifinal Round of the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Basketball Championship with wins Sunday afternoon. Here's how the four games played out -
#1 NE Southern New Hampshire 97, #4 SW Adelphi 95 | BOXSCORE
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sophomore Daquaise Andrews and redshirt-junior Chris Walters
combined for 55 points to lead Southern New Hampshire to a 97-95 come-from-behind victory against Adelphi on Sunday afternoon in NE10 Championship quarterfinal action at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
The Penmen, the top seed in the Northeast Division, advance to their third straight semifinal and fourth in the last five seasons where they will play host to Saint Rose, the Southwest Division's No. 2 seed, Wednesday, March 1 (7 p.m.) at the Fieldhouse. Adelphi, the No. 4 seed from the Southwest, will most likely see its season come to a close, barring a massive shift in the regional rankings.
Andrews poured in a career-high 28 points (14-20 FG), including 16 in the second half, to go along with seven rebounds and three assists, while Walters dropped in 27 (8-11 FG, 11-14 FT) – with 17 coming after halftime – and pulled down six rebounds, made five steals and blocked three shots.
Senior Devin Gilligan, the NE10 Player of the Year, supported those two gargantuan efforts with 19 points (7-13 FG, 2-2 FT) and seven boards. Junior Dimitri Floras also reached double figures as he tallied 14 points (7-12 FG), four assists and three steals.
Michael Coffey paced the Panthers with 23 points. Manny Suarez recorded a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds, with Austin Beech doing the same with 20 points, 10 boards and six helpers.
#1 SW Le Moyne 61, #5 SW New Haven 47 | BOXSCORE
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior guard Anthony Richards scored 14 points in the second half to lead 24th-ranked Le Moyne to a 61-47 victory over New Haven in the Quarterfinals of the NE10 Conference Championships on Sunday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.
With the win, Le Moyne (22-5) advances to the NE10 Conference semifinals, which the Dolphins will host on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. against Saint Anselm. The semifinal berth is the program's fourth in 21 years in the conference and the second in four seasons. Saint Anselm enters the contest at 18-8 and winners of 12 of its last 14 games after the Dolphins dropped the Hawks to 6-6 on the year with a 67-65 come-from-behind win on January 10.
After misfiring on a pair of three-pointers in the first half, Richards went 4-for-5 from long range in the second half, while adding two free throws, to accumulate his team-best 14 points. He also pulled down five rebounds. Classmate Russell Sangster tallied 12 points, including nine in the first half, grabbed five rebounds and recorded a career-best four steals.
New Haven Roy Kane, Jr. led all scorers in the contest with 17 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Mihailo Vasic registered 14 points and seven rebounds.
#2 NE Saint Anselm 87, #3 SW Southern Connecticut 74 | BOXSCORE
MANCHESTER, N.H. – All five starters scored in double-figures as Saint Anselm defeated Southern Connecticut, 87-74, on Sunday afternoon in an NE10 Quarterfinal matchup at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium in Manchester, N.H.
The No. 2-seeded Hawks improve to 18-8 overall and advance to the NE10 Semifinals for the fifth-straight season and Saint Anselm will travel to top-seeded Le Moyne on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. matchup. Le Moyne defeated New Haven, 61-47, in one of the other NE10 Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon. Southern Connecticut drops to 17-12 with the setback.
Cody Ball led the Hawks with 21 points, while Chris Braley posted a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 20 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Harrison Taggart added 19 points and seven rebounds, with Taylor Fortin posting 16 points and four assists. Tim Guers rounded out the top scorers with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists.
Braley's 20 rebounds were the most for the Hawks in a game since Mike McCahey pulled down 20 boards back on Feb. 15, 2014 against Franklin Pierce.
Michael Mallory paced Southern Connecticut with 24 points, with Jerry Luckett, Jr. just missing a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
#2 SW Saint Rose 93, #3 NE Franklin Pierce 80 | BOXSCORE
ALBANY, N.Y. - Saint Rose forced visiting Franklin Pierce into 17 turnovers that the Golden Knights turned into 29 points on the way to today’s 93-80 NE10 Championship Quarterfinal victory. Saint Rose (24-6) will now visit Southern New Hampshire in Wednesday’s semifinal. The Penmen came back from a 14-point deficit to upend Adelphi 97-95 this afternoon in Manchester.
"This was an exciting ballgame. We were able to make them pay for their mishaps,” said head coach Brian Beaury. “I really feel good that we were able to outlast a very good Franklin Pierce ball club."
Both teams shot well as the Ravens (15-13), who came into the game having won five of their last six, shot 54.0 percent while the Golden Knights buried 58.2 percent of their opportunities. Franklin Pierce also outrebounded Saint Rose 32-21, but the Golden Knights turned the ball over a mere four times.
Junior forward Julian Lipinski scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down five rebounds, while junior guard Mical-Ryan Boyd finished with 20 points behind 8-for-12 shooting from the field. Also, senior forward Chris Dorgler had his usual all-around effort with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
It was close throughout the opening 20 minutes before the Golden Knights took a three point, 44-41, lead into the locker room at halftime.
They then took control behind a 26-5 run three minutes into the second stanza that transformed a 49-46 lead into a 24 point, 75-51, cushion with 8:28 to play. Dorgler knocked down a jumper to spark the jaunt and then buried a trey to cap it.
Junior forward Mike McDevitt finished with 19 points and Banton had 18 to pace Franklin Pierce.
