Gomez's Tally Five Minutes Into Overtime Wins 2017 Title for Hounds

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Assumption senior Ryan Gomez scored 4:41 into overtime, as the fourth-seeded Greyhounds defeated the second-seeded No. 2 Saint Michael's, 3-2, in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship title game on Saturday at a sold-out Cairns Arena.

It's the first title in program history for Assumption, which finishes the year with a mark of 11-15-2, and defeated top-seeded Saint Anselm en route to the championship.

Sophomore Colin Biebel recorded his first career multi-goal game, netting both Saint Michael's tallies, as the Purple Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Sophomore Sam Kelly got Assumption on the scoreboard with 14:35 left in the second period cutting the Saint Michael's lead in half. The score would remain 2-1 until 4:41 remaining in regulation when freshman John McDonagh picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season, tying the game at two apiece.

The game would remain tied at the end of regulation, sending it into overtime. From behind the net, sophomore Mac Carnes dished out front for Gomez, who squeezed a shot inside the left post at 4:41. Assumption's only shot of the overtime period proved to be the game, and title-winner.

Senior netminder Nick Commesso, pictured, was outstanding for the champion Greyhounds, turning aside 65 shots in the win. Saint Michael's Chris Johnson made 27 stops in defeat.
