Panthers' Incredible Run Comes to an End in College World Series

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – After beginning a season at 0-11, credit has to be given for a team to turn that around and make an appearance in the Division II Softball Championship - and Adelphi Softball did just that. After defeating University of Central Missouri in the first round at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, the Panthers dropped a 2-0 decision to Dixie State Friday evening then suffered an 8-0 loss to the University of North Georgia Saturday afternoon to be bumped from the tournament.
"I think we played a really good team, so we need to tip our hats to them. I'm really proud of our kids and their efforts throughout the weekend and now we have a little bit better idea of what the best teams in the nation look like," commented head coach Bree Nasti. "Until you get here you don't always know what that looks like. I can't say enough about our team; never in my 10 years experience of coaching experienced a lot of things that we [the team] have this year."
Krista King started the game off with an infield single to third to get things going for the Brown and Gold. Jordan Catalano reached by way of a pitch to the elbow after a long battle at the plate. UNG's Courtney Poole (NFCA/Schutt Sports National Player of the Year) retired the next three batters in order to escape the threatening Panthers.
Riding the momentum from the first game they played Saturday morning, North Georgia scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run homerun by Tiffanie Burns. The Nighthawks registered two more runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth, as Adelphi was held hitless.
Back-to-back singles started the fifth for UNG and both runs scored on a double by Jessica Finch. A sacrifice fly to right field scored the third run of the inning and eighth of the game to close the door on Adelphi's run at a National Championship in Oklahoma City.
"This is a place of legends and that's something that you keep in your mind when you're on the field," commented Jaclyn Binstock. "I also think that for us it kind of felt like home. Regardless of what field we play on, we show up and play Adelphi Softball and unfortunately today it didn't work out in our favor."
The team concludes the 2015 campaign at 31-22 overall, with a regular season title, east 1 region crown, East Super Regional championship and an appearance in the Division II World series- the program's first since moving to Division II in 1995.
