Falcons Men, Owls Women Stand Atop NE10 Swimming & Diving World
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bentley Men's team and the Southern Connecticut Women's team were crowned champions at the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Swimming & Diving Championships Sunday night.
The Owls edget out three-time defending champion Assumption 861-851, with Bentley finishing third (602). The Bentley men (880.5 points) outscored So. Connecticut (812), with Le Moyne (629.5) rounding out the top three.
It's the 11th title overall for the So. Connecticut women's program. The Owls won the first ten editions of the NE10 championships, and return to the top for the first time since 2013. For the Bentley men, it's their second NE10 title in the sport, and their first since 2010.
The Championships came to a close Sunday night following three-and-a-half days of competition at the Hutchinson Natatorium on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University.
Six records were set during the weekend's action, with five of them occurring in women's events. The So. Connecticut women's relay teams set new conference marks in the 200-yard medley (1:45.99) and the 400-yard medley (3:51.70). The new 200 medley mark broke an NE10 record that had stood since 2010.
The Bentley women's 800-yard freestyle relay set a new league mark with their time of 7:36.31, shattering the previous mark by 3.5 seconds.
Individual marks were set by Assumption's Shannon Quirk, Saint Michael's Lindsay McNall, and Le Moyne's Travis May.
Quirk broke her own mark in the 1650 Freestyle posting a time of 17:16.27, breaking the mark she set last year. McNall set a new NE10 record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.03. She replaces a mark that was set by former So. Connecticut national champion Amanda Thomas.
Le Moyne's May, who was honored as the Men's Swimmer of the Meet for his performances, set a new mark in the 200-yard butterfly with his time of 1:51.13.
