Pair of Conference Championship Records Fall on First Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – After a rain-soaked opening day of the 2016 Northeast-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the John G. Hoyt '52 Track & Field Complex on the campus of American International College, the Southern Connecticut Owls lead the men’s field, while Stonehill Skyhawks lead on the women’s side.
Two new NE-10 Championship records were set on the first day in addition to multiple NCAA provisional qualifying efforts.
Stonehill’s Nicole Borofski was the first to set a new mark, winning the women’s 1500-meter run with a time of 4:28.69, just ahead of teammate Aisha McAdams at 4:29.34. Both times are also provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II Championships. Also knocking down an NE-10 Championship record was Southern Connecticut’s Destiney Coward, who won the women’s hammer throw with an NCAA provisional-qualifying toss of 57.75 meters.
Southern Connecticut claimed two victories on the men’s side during the opening day of competition. Both Tresley Dupont and Michael Lee put forth NCAA provisional qualifying performances for the Owls. Dupont defended his hammer throw title with a toss of 60.50 meters, while Lee won the long jump with a mark of 7.30 meters. Bentley’s Holt Sihvonen also recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the men’s javelin with a toss of 60.39 meters.
Stonehill added two more victories in women’s competition, the pole vault and 4x800-meter relay, to garner 44 points. Southern Connecticut was not far behind in the women’s standings with 38 points, followed by Franklin Pierce in third with 33 points. In the men’s standings, the Owls racked up 82.5 points during the first day, while American International was second with 48 points and Stonehill was third with 40.5 points.
The second day of competition will begin with decathlon events starting a 9 a.m. on Saturday with heptathlon events starting at 9:30 a.m. Field events are slated to begin at 10:15 a.m., while track events are scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
