WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin has announced the hiring of Logan Sharpe as the head men's track and field coach. Sharpe assumed his responsibilities with the Chargers on Monday, June 27.
"I'm very excited to welcome Logan to the Charger family," said Chin. "He brings an impressive record of success to our track and field program and we feel like he is a perfect fit for the University of New Haven."
"I would like to thank Director of Athletics Debbie Chin and the members of the search committee for providing me an opportunity to continue my coaching career," said Sharpe. "I look forward to guiding the student-athletes at New Haven to success academically, athletically and in the community."
As a nine-time All-American at Southern Connecticut State University, Sharpe brings a high level of success to the program. His achievements on the track came in the 400 meter hurdles and as a member of the 4x400 and distance medley relays.
As a senior, the Esperance, N.Y. native earned All-America honors in the hurdles and the 4x400 while also being named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year.
In addition, Sharpe was named the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Track Athlete of the Year and was a two-time East Region Athlete of the Year. As a post-collegiate runner, he qualified for the 2015 Indoor USA Championships in the 600 meter run where he finished 12th overall with a time of 1:19.37.
Off the track, Sharpe was a Capital One/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American and was the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Indoor and Outdoor Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards recipient. Sharpe earned his undergraduate (2013) and graduate (2015) degrees from Southern Connecticut Exercise Science. While pursuing his master's degree, Sharpe also served as a Strength and Conditioning intern and Exercise Science Laboratory graduate assistant.
As a coach, Sharpe spent the past two seasons working with the Owls sprinters and hurdlers. During his tenure as an assistant coach at SCSU, the Owls posted a first place finish in the NE-10 Outdoor Championships in 2015, while finishing second at the indoor and outdoor championships this past season. In addition, Southern Connecticut finished third, out of 38 teams, at the 2016 New England Outdoor Championship, including multiple top-eight finishes in the sprint and hurdle events.
