Chargers Picked to Win NE-10 Volleyball Title

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. -  The University of New Haven, the defending conference champions, received 10 of a possible 15 first-place votes and 191 points overall to take the top spot in the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball Coaches' Preseason Poll, the conference office announced this morning.

New Haven defeated Merrimack College in last year's thrilling 5-set championship match, and the Chargers will be looking to win their fifth league title since joining the league in 2008.

Bentley University finished second in the coaches' poll with 174 points, including three first place votes, while Adelphi University checked in third with 168, including one first place nod.  The College of Saint Rose ranks fourth in the preseason poll with 161 points, including the final first place vote.

Merrimack College (137 points), Stonehill College (132), Franklin Pierce University (125), American International College (102), Southern New Hampshire University (89), and Southern Connecticut State University (82) round out the top ten.

Rounding out the rest of the NE-10 volleyball coaches' poll was Le Moyne College (54), Pace University (46), Assumption College and Saint Anselm College tied with 41 points apiece, and Saint Michael's College (32).

The volleyball season begins Thursday, September 4, with a match between NE-10 foes So. New Hampshire and Merrimack.  Conference playoffs get underway on Tuesday, November 11 with the championship game to be played on Saturday, November 15.
