Assumption's Sean Kenney Was a Four-Time Men's Tennis Player of the Year

NE10 40th Anniversary Home Page

Sean Kenney is one of the most dominant athletes to ever compete in the NE10. He was a force on the tennis courts for Assumption College from his arrival in the fall of 1999 until his graduation in the spring of 2003. He helped jumpstart a tennis dynasty which concluded with nine consecutive conference championships in 2008 and helped lead the men’s tennis program to heights it had never reached before.

The individual numbers for Kenney are staggering. Playing at No. 1 singles throughout his career for the Greyhounds he was a four-time NE10 Player of the Year, one of just two NE10 student-athletes in any sport to accomplish that feat. He went an impressive 71-7 overall and 44-2 in conference action. He was also 80-5 in doubles with a perfect 51-0 mark in NE10 play.

The team posted records of 18-7, 19-1, 23-5 and 17-2 during his career and won all 43 of its matches vs. Northeast-10 competition, while helping to extend its home win streak to 37 matches. Kenney led the Hounds to four conference regular-season and playoff titles, and four NCAA Regional Tournament berths. In 2002, he helped the Hounds become the first NE10 program to reach the NCAA Nationals by taking down Bloomsburg 5-4. More than 18 years after that feat was accomplished only one other NE10 tennis program has matched that.

He was named the 2003 Northeast-10 Conference Male Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year and also earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

As impressive as Kenney was in dual-match play, it was his tournament play that separated him from the rest of the region's elite. He won the ITA Eastern singles title in back-to-back seasons (2001, 02) and finished USTA No. 7 ranked nationally both seasons. Kenney was named the Eastern Senior Player-of-the Year by the ITA.  Playing with Ryan Richert ’03 he advanced to the 2002 national ITA doubles final in Houston. He was also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-Region honoree, an ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athlete selection and was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American.
