Northeast-10 Announces Fall Season Academic All-Conference Teams

Bentley leads way with 12 student-athletes selected to fall squads

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference is pleased to announce its Academic All-Conference teams for the 2012-13 fall athletic season.

In all, 87 student-athletes representing all 16 Northeast-10 institutions received Academic All-Conference selection for the fall season. The 87 individuals, competing in men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer, and volleyball, were recognized for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field.

To be eligible for selection to the Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and been either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.

The Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a committee vote of Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) and other athletic administrators.

Bentley led the way with 12 student-athletes placed on Northeast-10 Fall Academic All-Conference Teams, including four from the Falcons’ field hockey team and three from the football program.

American International College and Stonehill College both had 10 selections apiece, while Merrimack College and Southern Connecticut State University each had nine.

All 16 Northeast-10 member institutions had at least one honoree, while 12 of the 16 had three or more.

By sport, women’s soccer led the way with 21 placed onto the team, followed by field hockey with 17 and women’s cross country with 12. The men’s soccer and volleyball teams had 11 selections each.

Featured among the women’s cross country honorees was a trio of All-Conference First Team selections in Bentley University’s Tara Dooley, Stonehill's Caroline McBride and Chloe Boutelle of Saint Michael’s College.

Eight Northeast-10 Field Hockey First Team picks also received academic all-conference honors, including 2013 Northeast-10 Player of the Year Rachel McCarthy of University of Massachusetts Lowell, Beth Maguire (Bentley), Melissa Effertz (UMass Lowell), Jen Otis (Merrimack), Kerri Bergquist (Merrimack), Candace Waldie (Merrimack), Sarah Cebry (So. Connecticut), and Devin Ingersoll (Stonehill).

2013 Northeast-10 Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Year Weston Zeiner of Bentley was a fall academic all-conference pick, as was Merrimack’s Alejandro Fuchs, who was a First Team pick.

Allie Fitzsimmons of American Int’l, the 2013 Northeast-10 Women’s Soccer Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, was placed on the respective academic all-conference team, as was Goalkeeper of the Year Amy Wheaton from Stonehill.

Other 2013 Northeast-10 Women’s Soccer First Team selections also named to academic all-conference on Wednesday were Franklin Pierce University’s Aya Noguchi, Merrimack’s Danielle Dion, New Haven’s Monica Yanez, The College of Saint Rose’s Sydney Bond and Carmelina Puopolo, and Southern New Hampshire University’s Emily Mongeau.

In the sport of volleyball, 2013 Northeast-10 Libero of the Year Elyse Rowland of Pace University was selected to the academic all-conference team, as were First Team selections Chelsea Overholt of Adelphi University and Natasha Ray of Franklin Pierce.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
