Northeast-10 Announces Winter Season Academic All-Conference Teams

Sixty-eight student-athletes from seven
sports chosen for prestigious academic honor

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference is pleased to announce its Academic All-Conference teams for the 2012-13 winter athletic season.

In all, 68 student-athletes representing 15 Northeast-10 institutions received Academic All-Conference selection for the winter season. The 68 individuals, competing in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track & field were recognized for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field.

To be eligible for selection to the Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and been either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.

The Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a committee vote of Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) and other athletic administrators.

Southern Connecticut State University led the way with 10 student-athletes placed on Northeast-10 Winter Academic All-Conference Teams, including four from the Owls’ women’s swimming & diving team.

Bentley University was second among member institutions with nine named to Academic All-Conference teams, while Stonehill College had seven honorees.

The sport of women’s indoor track & field had the most selections with 16, while women’s swimming & diving had 14.

Dominykas Milka from The College of Saint Rose, a Northeast-10 First Team selection and Capital One Academic All-America choice, headlined the five men’s basketball selections. Assumption’s Kevin Donahue was also lauded after receiving Northeast-10 Third Team honors this season.

Bentley’s Lauren Battista was among the eight women’s basketball selections, as the junior was a Capital One Academic All-America selection this year. Battista was also a Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team pick and was named the 2013 Northeast-10 Championship Most Outstanding Player.

Bentley's Jacqui Brugliera and Merrimack’s Kelly Schatzlein also received Academic All-Conference honors after being named to the Northeast-10 Women’s Basketball Third Team last month by the conference’s head coaches. Senior Megan Olsen of Saint Michael’s College was another notable Academic All-Conference choice after garnering Capital One Academic All-America honors this past February.

Stonehill’s Dana Borges was one of six ice hockey student-athletes to earn recognition after Borges led the Northeast-10 in assists (22) and points (37) this year on his way to a First Team All-Conference selection.

Saint Rose seniors Caitlin Brauer and Naomi Woodcock received Academic All-Conference recognition for women's swimming & diving after both student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Championship last month.

Among the men’s indoor track & field Academic All-Conference recipients was the University of New Haven’s David Thomas, the 2013 Northeast-10 Championship Men’s Athlete of the Meet. Thomas also competed in two events at the NCAA Championship, earning All-America status in the long jump.

New Haven’s Ada Udaya, the 2013 Northeast-10 Women’s Athlete of the Year, earned All-America status at this year’s NCAA Championship in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes.

The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
