NCAA Diversity & Inclusion Week - Day 2: Championing Change

NCAA Diversity & Inclusion Week - Day 2: Championing Change

The NE10 is fortunate to have student-athletes that champion for change on their campus and in their community. On Day 2 of the NCAA Diversity & Inclusion Social Media Campaign a number of our schools shared the ways they as groups are working to make changes and create more inclusive environments.

Adelphi continues to live up to the Diversity Pledge student-athletes and SAAC signed this spring

Assumption celebrates the work of ALANA on its campus and AU Allies

  • ALANA stands for African, Latinx, Asian, and Native American and it is a club where students, staff, and faculty come together to enhance their multicultural awareness. ALANA works to celebrate cultures as well as talk about important and relevant topics in society through weekly meetings and campus events including the Latinx Festival, Black History Month, the Native American Program, and Lunar New Year.
  • AU Allies at Assumption is also vital as it works to create a campus environment that acknowledges and respects the human dignity of all persons, with special concern for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We hope to offer students an accepting, supportive, and creative space in which they can forge meaningful friendships, discuss the issues that are important to them and feel comfortable being themselves.

Franklin Pierce has a number of organizations on campus student-athletes can utilize that help promote diversity and inclusion

  • The groups highlighted on campus the aid in promoting diversity and inclusion are JAAA, ALANA, Pierre Morton, & Derek Scalia. These organizations put on events and bring awareness to diversity and inclusion. These events are put on throughout the year and social media posts are included as part of social media campaigns.
  • JAAA stands for Justice in Action Athletic Alliance and works in concert with the Department of Athletics, constituents from across the University, and members of the greater Rindge community. ALANA stands for African, Latinx, Asian, and Native American while Pierre Morton (chief diversity officer) and Derek Scalia (director of retention and diversity) are incredible resources on campus to help plan events.

Pace student-athletes and SAAC continuously work to promote diversity and inclusion on campus through the following steps:

  • Continue to raise awareness of and promote interest in the Pace Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Committee. This unique Committee is in the process of being re-established this semester and will come back stronger than ever before, allowing students from diverse backgrounds with unique identities to join hands in making our Athletic Department an embracing and including environment for all individuals involved. This committee will include at least one representative from each team within the Athletics Department, and each representative will serve as a communicator between their individual teams and the Athletic Department when it comes to concerns or suggestions regarding Diversity and Inclusion. The Committee will have the responsibility of ensuring that all athletics programs and events uphold our university's commitment to combating racism and creating a safe and inclusive environment for all.
  • Throughout this school year our sports teams will partner with the LGBTQA+ Center on campus to host home sports games/matches that are Pride themed. Examples of this include our Pride Hoops Night, featuring our Men's and Women's basketball teams, where the community can come together to celebrate Pace's inclusiveness and value in the diversity we have across our campus.

Saint Anselm SAAC and its student-athletes have pledged to take on the following statements in the name of championing change on their own campus:

  •  Statement 1: Acknowledge the differences that exist and consciously embrace them.
  • Statement 2: Treat others how 'they' want to be treated.

Saint Michael's SAAC and student-athletes work to promote diversity and inclusion on campus in a number of ways including:

  • Creating a DEI position on their SAAC E-Board: " The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion position was created to help foster collaboration with other student groups on campus already engaging in DEI work across a wide range of issues. I think it's important that the athletic community stand behind athletes and community members who face discrimination daily by dedicating an entire aspect of SAAC to these relevant issues."
  • Annual Pride Parade: Every September, it's tradition for Saint Michael's College athletic teams to collaborate with campus clubs Common Ground, Student Government Association, and the Center for Women and Gender to attend and walk in an annual pride parade in downtown Burlington, VT. It's been a great way to show our support to the LGBTQ+ community both at SMC and in the greater Burlington area where students call home.
  • DEI Trainings: To continue to promote diversity and equity on Saint Michael's College campus, we plan on offering various training sessions centered around issues of inclusion to all student-athletes, coaches, and faculty. For example, we are planning a keynote speaker event in which attendees will participate in thoughtfully led small group discussions. Creating a safe environment where students and faculty can openly express concerns and suggestions for improvement is a specific goal of these upcoming trainings.
