Stonehill Wins Northeast-10 Presidents’ Cup For Third Consecutive Year

Portsmouth, N.H. – Stonehill College registered 189.5 points to win the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup for the third consecutive year, and the fourth time overall. It's the eighth consecutive year that the Skyhawks have finished in the top three.

Stonehill's first Presidents' Cup came during the 2005-2006 school year.

The Presidents' Cup is presented annually to signify overall athletic excellence in the Northeast-10 Conference, and is awarded to the institution that compiles the most points based on the placement at the conclusion of the regular season of each of its programs which compete in league championships.

Points for men's and women's cross country, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and men's golf are awarded based on placement in respective conference championships.

"Congratulations to the student-athletes, coaches, and administrators at Stonehill College on their outstanding accomplishment of capturing the Presidents' Cup for the third straight year," said Northeast-10 Commissioner Julie Ruppert.

"In a 16-team Conference as deep and competitive as the Northeast-10, the success necessary to earn this honor requires tremendous dedication and commitment from the entire campus community and all of Stonehill should share in the celebration of this accomplishment. Stonehill is clearly living up to the ideals of Division II by providing high-level athletics competition, and balancing that with notable academic achievements in the classroom."

Stonehill, which participates in 19 of the 23 total sports offered by the conference, was consistently successful in a number of their programs as baseball, men's basketball, men's and women's cross country, ice hockey, women's lacrosse, women’s soccer, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball, all finished in the top five in the conference during their respective seasons.

Both men’s and women’s cross country won conference championships at the Northeast-10 title meet in the fall, while the Skyhawks women’s tennis team finished in a three-way tie for the regular season title.

“Stonehill athletics, again, had a tremendous year as a result of the talent, commitment, and perseverance of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff. To win this award for the third consecutive year in such a competitive conference is a remarkable accomplishment, and on behalf of Stonehill I am grateful to everyone within the Department for their contributions,” said Stonehill Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Brendan Sullivan.

“Beyond that, I would like to thank and recognize our President Fr. Mark Cregan, C.S.C., our Vice President for Student Affairs, Fr. John Denning C.S.C, and our Assistant Vice President for Athletics and Recreation, Paula Sullivan. This is an institutional award, and it would not be possible without their constant support and promotion of our dedicated student-athletes and coaches.”

Southern Connecticut State University finished in second with 177.0 points, while Bentley University finished in third with 176.0 points. The two schools exchanged spots from where they finished a year ago.

As they did last year, Adelphi University finished in fourth place (169.5), while the University of Massachusetts Lowell (151.0) came in fifth in the 16-team conference.

Merrimack College (136.5) checked in sixth, Franklin Pierce University (115.0) and Le Moyne College (115.0) finished in a tie for seventh, while American International College checked in ninth with 114.5 points.

The rest of the schools in order included; The University of New Haven (113.5) and Saint Rose (112.5), Southern New Hampshire University (102), Pace University and Saint Anselm College with 94.0, Saint Michael’s College (92.0), and Assumption College (89.0).

The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,500 student-athletes. Each year, 4,500 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
