Standout Softball Player Honored as Conference's Woman of the Year
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Over four years at Adelphi, Brenna Martini was named All-Conference, All-Region and All-American - and now, she can also call herself the Northeast-10 Conference Woman of the Year. The Fairfield, Conn. native was named the Woman of the Year at the NE10 banquet recently, an annual event which recognizes student-athlete and team achievements for the previous season. The award is voted on and selected by the league's senior women administrators
"Receiving the NE10 Woman of the Year award is an incredible honor," Martini said. "I am so grateful that I am able to represent not only my team and school, but the NE10 Conference. A player does not win an award like this without the support of their team and their coaches, and I am so grateful to them for that."
The most decorated player in Adelphi softball history, Martini graduated as the program's all-time leader in nearly all offensive categories, including batting average, home runs, RBIs, doubles, walks, runs scored and total bases. She was named the league's Player of the Year in three straight seasons, the first in league history ever to do so, after earning Rookie of the Year laurels in her freshman year.
In addition, Martini was a three-time All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association, including First Team selection in her sophomore and junior years.
"When you play a team sport, awards are very seldom individual, and this award is no exception," she added. "You also are not able to win an award like this without the support of your school and their administration, so I am very blessed to call myself a Panther."
The NE10's Man and Woman of the Year awards honor student-athletes for their excellence in competition, in the classroom, and in community service. Martini's name will be forwarded to the NCAA for their National Woman of the Year award, which will be announced in October.
Each of the league's 15 member institutions nominated a student-athlete for each of these awards and the 30 total nominations were narrowed down to three finalists for each award, both of which were selected by the organization's Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) Council. Tyler McLaren of Southern New Hampshire University's cross country program was named the league's Man of the Year.
Martini was selected from three finalists which also included fellow softball student-athlete Alyssa Williamson of Merrimack and Southern Connecticut State track and field athlete Christine Volz.
