With more years of service as an athletic administrator than anyone in College history, his name is synonymous with the pride and tradition of Saint Michael's athletics.

As an athlete, Markey excelled in both basketball and baseball; captaining and leading both sports to state championships.

An extremely successful basketball coach, he led the College team to two New England Division II Championships, and in 1965, to the National Final Four. He was named Vermont Coach of the Year in 1964,1965, and 1967, and was UPI's Division II Coach of the Year in 1965 and 1967.

Markey also coached the Saint Michael's baseball team for 19 years.

An NCAA cornerstone in New England, he was President of the New England College Athletic Conference, Chairman of the NCAA Division II Selection Committee, member of the ECAC Executive Council, and recipient of the Julian Award for exemplary service.

Markey retired after 29 years as athletic director, Only the fourth AD in the College’s history overseeing a vast growth of the program.

A standout in basketball and baseball, he went on to serve in the Army for 4 years

Always willing to offer his time, he served on committees to numerous to count along with his vast NCAA and ECAC work, he also served as
Secretary/Treasurer, the old Mideast Collegiate Conference
Assistant Commissioner, Northeast-10 Conference

Among the many awards and honors bestowed upon him, there are three of particular distinction: in 1971, he was awarded the prestigious Alvin “Doggy” Julian Award for distinguished service to college basketball; the following year, Governor Deane C. Davis proclaimed June 17, 1972 Ed Markey Day in the state of Vermont, in recognition of his incredible basketball coaching career; and on October 15, 1988, he was inducted into the Saint Michael’s College Athletic Hall of Fame.
