Women's Tennis Falls Short in Season Opener to Roger Williams, 5-4

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team fell to Roger Williams University on Monday during their season opener at RWU Tennis Courts.

  • The Hawks host Nichols College on Saturday, September 9 for their season home opener. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Saint Anselm Tennis Courts.
 HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) and junior Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) claimed the first victory of the day after defeating Gracie McCarthy and Olivia Santoro by an 8-3 final in the No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Irene Garbo (Sardinia, Italy) and junior Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) also secured an 8-6 win in the top doubles spot to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage heading into singles action.
  • Garbo swept Gianna Ferraro in the No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0) to give Saint Anselm a 3-1 lead. Santoro narrowed the Hawks' advantage to 3-2 after picking a victory in the No. 5 singles. Heredia Osante gave Saint Anselm another point with her dominant performance in No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1 against Alessia Cahoon.
  • Roger Williams earned a crucial point in No. 6 singles to set up a showdown in the No. 4 singles match. Julia Svor battled against McCarthy who took the first set, 7-5, after winning the last three straight games. Roger Williams took an early 4-1 advantage in the second set, but Svor fought back by picking up two games to make it 4-3. McCarthy would secure the 5-4 victory for Roger Williams after winning the second set 6-4.
