No. 5 Assumption Outlasts No. 6 Saint Rose 2-1 for First NE10 Title
WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Kevin Hernandez gave No. 5 Assumption a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute and the Greyhounds led for the final 75 minutes of action on the way to capturing the program's first-ever NE10 Championship with a 2-1 victory over No. 6 seed Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon.
Hernandez put Assumption on top with a header off a feed from Ruben Faria at 24:08 on a free kick. In the second half Tyler Moreau stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 79th minute off a great pass from Mauro Cortez. Saint Rose didn't go quietly, scoring with just under four minutes left to close within one. However, the Hound defense did the rest to set off a raucous celebration at the final horn.
Assumption goalkeeper Sebastian Jimenez made seven saves to secure the victory, while Hernandez scored for the second straight game and finished with three in the NE10 Tournament. Hernandez was named to the All-Championship Team along with senior backs Brian Flynn and Alex Moschella. Moschella was also honored as the Most Outstanding Player of the NE10 Championship.
The NE10 Title is the first for the Hounds who had never won an NE10 Tournament game entering this postseason. They have earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship and will find out their opponent on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Following the contest, Saint Rose's Harry Soederlind was honored as the Elite 24 winner. Soederlind is a sophomore marketing major with a 3.88 GPA.
