Owls Claim Fourth Straigth Outdoor Title


SPRINGFIELD, Mass – The Southern Connecticut Owls clinched their fourth consecutive Northeast-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship with a record-breaking performance Friday on the campus of American International College. 

The Owls totaled an NE10 record 301.5 points overall, winning by over 100 points as AIC came in second with 176 points. New Haven earned a third place finish with 105 points while Franklin Pierce and Adelphi rounded out the top five. 

AIC's Leakey Kipkosgei broke the NE10 record in the 3000 meter steeplechase with his time of 9:04.7. Teammate Clement Paillon set a new NE10 mark in the 800 meters with his time of 1:49.51. Two NE10 records in the 10K and the hammer were set on Thursday.

Following the competition the NE10 awarded its meet awards and Adelphi's Evangelos Fradelakis was named Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet while Southern Connecticut's Nigel Green took home Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet. Fradelakis won the hammer on Thursday with an NE10 record of 6.02 meters and then took second in the Discus (47.01m) and fifth in the javelin with a distance of 52.39. Green, meanwhile, won the 100 and 200 meter dash events in 10.66 and 21.49 seconds while also anchoring the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Antonio Rua of Franklin Pierce won the Elite 24 Award for posting the highest GPA of any men's track and field athlete. The junior biology major owns a 3.98 GPA.
