Embrace the Championship: Saint Anselm, Stonehill to Meet Sunday in NE10 Title Game

MANSFIELD, Mass. - On Sunday afternoon, Stonehill will host Saint Anselm in the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball Championship final after the two programs recorded victories in the semifinal round on Thursday night. It is the 12th all-time appearance for the Skyhawks in the championship game, while it is Saint Anselm's first since the 1998-99 season. 

The Northeast Division's top-seeded Skyhawks edged Le Moyne, the two seed out of the Southwest Division, by a narrow 55-53 margin at the Merkert Gymnasium behind a 16-point effort by Gabrielle Reuter. Meanwhile on Long Island, the Northeast's second-seeded Hawks upset the overall top seed in Adelphi, 70-59, behind a monstrous 35-point, 19-rebound double-double from NE10 Player of the Year, Shannon Ryan

Stonehill has earned the right to host on Sunday, with tip-off for the championship game in Easton, Mass. scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be shown live on NE10NOW.tv


No. 1 Stonehill 55, No. 2 Le Moyne 53 - Box Score

EASTON, Mass. – Northeast Division top-seeded Stonehill, ranked No. 25 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and D2SIDA Top 25 polls, surged to a 12-point lead after three quarters of play and held off Southwest No. 2 Le Moyne down the stretch to secure a 55-53 victory in semifinal round action of the 2020 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

Stonehill (22-5, 16-3 NE10), ranked No. 2 in this week's NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, advances to the NE10 Championship game for the 12th time in program history, where it will host Northeast No. 2 Saint Anselm (21-6, 15-4 NE10) at Merkert Gym on Sunday at 1 p.m. Saint Anselm advanced with a 70-59 victory over Southwest No. 1 and No. 8/5 Adelphi (27-3, 17-2 NE10) in tonight's other semifinal in Garden City, New York. Le Moyne, ranked No. 5 in this week's NCAA East Regional rankings, figures to extend its season in the NCAA Tournament next week.


No. 2 Saint Anselm 70, No. 1 Adelphi 59 - Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm women's basketball team will play for a Northeast-10 Conference title after picking up a 70-59 victory over the No. 8 program in NCAA Division II, Adelphi, on Thursday in the NE10 semifinals.

The Hawks, ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division II East Region poll, improve to 21-6 overall on the season and will head to top-seeded Stonehill this Sunday, Mar. 8 at 1 p.m. for the NE10 Championship game. Adelphi (27-3) loses for just the third time in 30 games this season, but does so to Saint Anselm for the second time in 2019-20.

Saint Anselm will make its first NE10 title game appearance since the 1998-99 season in which it fell to Bentley by 10 points. The Hawks won their only league postseason title in the 1990-91 campaign, toppling Bentley by an 81-76 margin.

Senior Shannon Ryan led the Saint Anselm offense with 35 points to her credit, reeling in a game-high 19 rebounds for the Hawks. She now has scored a single-season best 621 points to date this year, averaging 23 points for Saint Anselm across 27 games. She has also established a new single-season team record with 406 rebounds in 2019-20.
