Embrace the Championship: Stonehill Captures Sixth NE10 Title, 80-61

Kayla Raymond Named Most Outstanding Player in Leading Skyhawks to First NE10 Title Since 2007-08


EASTON, Mass. –  No. 1 seed Stonehill trailed second seeded Saint Anselm 14-7 with three minutes left in the first quarter but responded with an 24-4 run over the next eight minutes of action to take control on the way to an 80-61 victory on Sunday afternoon in Merkert Gym. The Skyhawks clinched the program's sixth NE10 Title with the victory, while extending their win streak to 12 games.

Kelsey Shaw paced Stonehill with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Kayla Raymond added 17 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Gabrielle Reuter anchored the defense with six blocks, ten points, five rebounds and four assists as the Skyhawks shot 50.9 percent from the floor and went 10 of 16 from beyond the arc. Saint Anselm only shot 42.6 percent from the floor. Shannon Ryan led her team with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Petyon Steinman added 18 points. 

Saint Anselm came out firing in the opening seven minutes of action, as Shannon Ryan helped push the Hawks to a 14-7 advantage on a free throw with 3:00 left in the first quarter. Madison Seymour ended the run with a triple and Shaw followed with a three to pull within one. Stonehill finished the quarter on a 5-2 run to take an 18-16 lead. The Skyhawks kept the run going, outscoring the Hawks 23-9 in the second quarter for a 41-25 lead at the break. 

In the second half, Stonehill pushed its lead to 49-29 four minutes into the period and led 62-42 through three quarters. The Skyhawks kept Saint Anselm at bay in the fourth and last minute jumper by the Hawks provided the 80-61 final.

Stonehill has secure the NE10's automatic bid into the NE10 Tournament, while Saint Anselm will await its fate during tonight's NE10 Division II Selection Show at 10 p.m.
