Assumption, Bentley Move On to Quarterfinals of NE10 Women’s Tennis Championship

Top Eight Seeds in Action on Wednesday.


MANSFIELD, Mass. – Assumption and Bentley held serve on Sunday in the first round of the NE10 Women's Tennis Championship, advancing to Wednesday's quarterfinals with wins over lower seeds American International and Saint Anselm, respectively. 

Seventh-ranked Assumption will travel to play second-seeded Adelphi for the second time this season, losing 4-0 in the first meeting on March 14. Eighth-seeded Bentley will visit regular season champion Franklin Pierce after losing to the Ravens, 7-0, on April 21.


(7) Assumption 6, (10) American International 1 – Scoresheet

Behind singles and doubles victories from Julia Chappell, Valeria Sanchez and Cara McCormack, No. 7 Assumption bounced No. 10 American International from the NE10 Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday by a 6-1 margin.

Chappell secured a tight win at No. 1 singles over Meritxell Jimeno-Vicente, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7, then teamed up with Sanchez to beat Jimeno-Vicente and Jordyn Isaac at No. 1 doubles, 6-2. Sanchez picked up a win at No. 3 singles and McCormack at No. 4 singles, helping the Greyhounds advance to Wednesday's quarterfinal round.

Sunday's match was played at the Paxton Tennis & Fitness Club in Paxton, Mass.


(8) Bentley 4, (9) Saint Anselm 0 – Box Score

Makena Romagnano and Alessa Matuty led the charge on Sunday for No. 8 Bentley, winning their singles matches and as a doubles team to cruise to a 4-0 victory over No. 9 Saint Anselm in the first round of the NE10 Women's Tennis Championship.

Romagnano won at No. 1 singles, beating Emily Jacy, 6-1, 6-2, while Matuty grabbed a win at No. 2 singles over Ana Kapothanasis, 6-1, 6-1. The duo then beat Jacy and Maikah Bulpitt at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, as the Falcons took the doubles point. Zoe Chin helped clinch the match for Bentley with her win at No. 4 singles against Dominique Bolduc (6-2, 6-3).

Sunday's match was played at the Woburn Racquet Club, as inclement weather forced the match to be moved indoors.
