Adelphi Hosts National Girls and Women in Sports Day Event

Adelphi NGWSD (2024)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Second Annual NGWSD Event Held by Adelphi.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Adelphi University department of athletics hosted its second annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day event in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of Nassau County.

With over 100 athletes registered, various sports teams provided activities throughout the morning for participants, following breakfast from local sponsor, My Three Sons.

"Our collaboration with Adelphi University's department of athletics for the second annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day event was truly heartwarming," said Marilou Owens, Chief Membership and Diversity Officer, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. "It was wonderful to witness over 100 Girl Scouts engaging in a variety of sports activities. Also evident was that the event provided a memorable experience, offering these young Girl Scouts the chance to learn and grow their skills, in volleyball, field hockey, soccer, tennis, golf, track, and bowling."

"Beyond skill-building, the emphasis on sportsmanship throughout the day added a special touch. Adelphi's athletes truly inspired the next generation, embodying positivity, potential, and the core values of commitment and resilience. My sincerest thanks go to Adelphi University and its exceptional athletes for their invaluable contribution to shaping the future of tomorrow's athletes," she continued.

"It's incredible to see our athletes contribute their time and energy to an event like this," said head volleyball coach Danielle MacKnight. "To see them inspire younger generations firsthand makes me remember why I got into coaching in the first place. I firmly believe it's events like these that make a lasting impression and we look forward to continuing the relationship with the Girl Scouts."

In addition to learning skills for volleyball, field hockey and soccer, attendees were also exposed to tennis, golf, track and bowling at this year's event. The overall theme of Sportsmanship was promoted throughout the day with posters that Adelphi athletes had made leading up to the day's activities.

"This event is a great way to connect with the youth of today and allow them a glimpse of what could be possible for their future," commented Madison Apicella, junior women's soccer athlete. "I have done this event for the past two years and enjoy watching their enthusiasm grow when presenting new activities. The interaction among the students and athletes captures the essence of positivity and possibility for all involved."

Although no station happened in the pool, first year swimmer Kellee Munoz donated her time to serve as a group leader during the event.

"As a group leader it was a beautiful reminder of why I started this sport in the first place. It was so much fun getting to know the girls, and watch them try out sports they have never considered partaking in. Overall, I loved helping out at this event and being surrounded by passionate and hard working girls who were willing to try new things and show me how important it is to honor all women in sports."

Adelphi counselor and sport social worker Tobie Langsam joined the group for a brief Q&A and presentation surrounding the theme of the day.

What Adelphi Athletes are Saying:
"We had so many young girls show up to learn a bunch of new sports, it was amazing! My group of third graders were excited to be there and showed up eager to learn new things. I am honored that I had the opportunity to inspire those young girls that wanted to know more about those sports and were engaged in every station. I hope they take what they learned about sportsmanship and apply it to their activities." - Amanda Lee, Field Hockey

"This past weekend was a great opportunity for us as college athletes to give back and have a full circle moment with our younger counterparts. With the event focus on sportsmanship, it is safe to say that the future of girls in sports is safe with the younger generation." - Hannah Trinh, Women's Golf

"This was such a fun and inspiring event to be a part of. I loved seeing how excited the girls were to learn about all of the different sports, and hope they will continue to aspire to compete and show strong sportsmanship." - Amy McCaffrey, Women's Golf

"As a group leader, I was able to watch the Girl Scouts learn different sports and apply the same enthusiasm to all. I took away such valuable lessons from this event such as commitment, resilience, mental toughness, and the Girl Scouts reminded me of my motivation and drive for my sport. It was so inspirational to see them look up to the student-athletes and I too walked away feeling as though they inspired me to keep going." - Zoe West, Volleyball
