INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Assumption College has been named as the winner of the NCAA Division II Community Engagement Award of Excellence for the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds are one of 17 winners from across the nation.

“It is an honor for our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to be recognized for this award,” said Bethany Ellis, associate director of athletics. “The student-athletes did an excellent job organizing and promoting the Bone Marrow Registration drive. I still regularly hear comments from the campus community about the success of the drive and students frequently cite it as being a memorable component of their college experience. Student-athletes in colleges across the conference are doing great community work and this award is a meaningful recognition of our student-athletes' efforts.”

The contest was staged to build momentum for Division II’s community engagement initiative and reward institutions for their creativity in advancing relationships within their community. Division II schools were encouraged to submit their best community engagement promotion from the “ideas that work” section on the Division II community engagement web site at www.diicommunity.org.

“I would like to congratulate our associate director of athletics, Bethany Ellis, and our former director of athletics, Ted Paulauskas, on their hard work on the Bone Marrow Drive and the other projects that they dedicated so many hours to,” said Nick Smith, director of athletics. “I would also like to thank the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Assumption College community on their dedication to this cause and we hope to continue this community engagement for years to come.”

The 17 winners from across the country will each receive $500 for a community engagement idea as the NCAA has more than 300 ideas available on their web site. The NCAA is encouraging the institutions to use the funds to further support engagement both on campus and in their local community.
