DIVISION II LEARFIELD CUP STANDINGS
Southern Connecticut and Stonehill Rank Among Top-50 Nationwide
South Easton, Mass. – The University of
Massachusetts Lowell is tied for 14th among Division II
institutions nationwide in the first spring release of the
Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings. The final
standings for the 2011-12 academic year will be released on June
6.
The Learfield Cup honors colleges and universities for achieving
success in sports. The program was developed by the National
Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today in a combined effort, with point totals based on
each institution’s finish in up to 14 different sports, made
up by seven men’s and seven women’s sport programs.
UMass Lowell now has a total of 401.5 points in the standings,
which leads all Northeast-10 Conference schools, after adding 59.5
points this spring. The school gathered the points as a result of
the River Hawks’ men’s golf and softball programs both
advancing to the NCAA Tournament, finishing 27th and 33rd,
respectively, in the country.
In all, 15 of the 16 Northeast-10 member institutions have
received points in the standings, with Southern Connecticut State
University placing second among conference schools with 270.0
points, good for 46th in the nation. So. Connecticut gained 78
points this spring for the success of its softball program, which
advanced to the Division II College World Series in Louisville.
Stonehill College is third among Northeast-10 members with 250.0
points, which currently places the school 50th in the country,
after grabbing 25 points from its women’s tennis team making
NCAAs.
The Northeast-10 has seven schools in the top-100 overall, with
Bentley University (211.0 points) in 66th place, Franklin Pierce
University (188.0) in 79th place, Adelphi University (180.0) in
84th place and Merrimack College (155.0) in 96th place.
The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges
and universities located in New England and New York that is
committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic
opportunities for more than 5,500 student-athletes. Each year,
4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships
in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the
country. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within
