South Easton, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference has announced the 2009-2010 Institutional Scholar-Athlete Honorees that have been chosen by their respective institutions. A male and female winner will be selected from a pool of 32 honorees, 16 men and 16 women, as the 2009-2010 Northeast-10 Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The winners will be announced Monday, June 7 at the NE-10 Awards Banquet in Burlington, Vt.
The honorees include, Bailey Ince and Jackie Bogensberger (Adelphi), Ohionameh Aregbeyen and Kristin Boesenberg (American Int'l), Michael Colebrook and Leslie Lupien (Assumption), Brian Jasset and Alyssa Sliney (Bentley), Phil LaBreck and Johannah Leedham (Franklin Pierce), Jacob McAndrew and Christina Harrison (Le Moyne), Ryan Richards and Molly Clay (UMass Lowell), Dylan Ellis and Kelly Pasquantonio (Merrimack), Austin Michalski and Kristine Lambracht (New Haven), Callum Jones and Taylor Losey (Pace), Kevin DeBenedetto and Erin Higgins (Saint Anselm), Jared Berry and Katelyn Billing (Saint Michael's), Kevin Jackson and Mary German (Saint Rose), Greg Malen and Laura Brustolon (So. Connecticut), John Frey and Kristin Moore (So. New Hampshire) and Michael Mashkevich and Jaclyn Craig (Stonehill).
Adelphi University
Bailey Ince (Jamesport, N.Y.) is a political science major with a 3.81 grade point average (GPA) and was a member of the cross country and track & field teams at Adelphi. During the indoor season Ince provisionally qualified for the 800-meter run at the NCAA Championships and was a member of the third place 4x400 relay team during the NE-10 Outdoor Championships. He also earned All-Academic honors this year from the USTFCCCA. Ince was inducted and is a member of the Levermore Global Scholars program at Adelphi.
Jackie Bogensberger (Valley Stream, N.Y.) is an adolescent education major with a 3.94 GPA and is a member of the women's lacrosse program at Adelphi. Bogensberger has helped lead the Panthers to the program's first-ever Northeast-10 Regular Season and Tournament titles this season. Adelphi finished conference play with a perfect 11-0 record and are currently competing in the NCAA Division II Championship. The Panthers will face C.W. Post at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Gettysburg, Pa., in the NCAA semifinals. Bogensberger made dean's list all four years while at Adelphi and earned academic honors from the IWLCA and Co-Sida in 2009.
American International College
Ohionameh Aregbeyen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is a physical therapy major with a 3.80 GPA and was a member of the men's soccer team at American International. This past season Aregbeyen played in all 19 games and totaled three goals and an assist for seven points while playing in the back position. He made the Honor Roll and Dean's List every semester and earned the Milt Piepul scholar-athlete award for American International.
Kristin Boesenberg (Pocono Pines, Pa.) is a marketing major with a 3.91 GPA and was a member of the women's basketball team at American International. Boesenberg averaged just over ten points per game during her senior season to go along with 3.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. She was named team captain and earned the team's Hilton White Memorial Award. Boesenberg was on the Honor Roll and Dean's List every semester at American International and was named the athletic department's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Assumption College
Michael Colebrook (Leicester, Mass.) is a French and philosophy major with a 3.97 GPA and was a member of the baseball team at Assumption. In his senior season Colebrook appeared in 12 games, while starting 11. He finished 5-3 and surrendered 86 hits, 41 runs (32 earned), walked nine batters and struck out 60 through 71.0 innings of work. Colebrook also earned Co-SIDA Academic All-District First Team honors. He was also the recipient of the Rev. Armand Desautels Memorial Award as the Premier Senior Student-Athlete at Assumption.
Leslie Lupien (Pomfret, Conn.) is a biology major with a 3.95 GPA and was a member of the women's basketball team at Assumption. During her four year career, Lupien became a defensive standout for the Greyhounds, while scoring 500 points during her career. In the classroom, Lupien received a perfect 4.0 GPA in five of her eight semesters and made Dean's List all eight. She is also a three-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection.
Bentley University
Brian Jasset (Norwood, Mass.) is a finance major with a 3.72 GPA and was a member of the men's golf team at Bentley. This past season, Jasset led the team with a 78.3 stroke average and finished 11 of 16 rounds in the 70's with a season best 74 twice. For his career he has a 78.7 average in 62 and 1/3 rounds of action. Jasset is a three-time All-Northeast-10 honoree and has been selected to the NE-10 Academic All-Conference team twice.
Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, Mass.) is a computer information systems major with a 3.76 GPA and was a member of the field hockey team at Bentley. Sliney, a three-time NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Year, finished her senior season with a 16-5 record and posted a 1.43 goals against average to go along with five shutouts. She helped lead the Falcons to two straight NE-10 Championships and four consecutive NCAA appearances. Sliney finished her career third in school history in wins and shutouts and fifth in goals against average. She is also a three-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference selection and a four-time NFHCA Division II All-America honoree.
Franklin Pierce University
Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H.) is a political science major with a 3.86 GPA and was a member of the ice hockey team at Franklin Pierce. This past season, LaBreck ranked third on the team in points as he recorded 12 goals and assisted on ten others for 22 points. During his four year career he appeared in 77 games and recorded 33 goals, 37 assists for 70 points. LaBreck is a two-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection and was this year's senior male scholar-athlete of the year at Franklin Pierce.
Johannah Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England) is a sport & recreation major with a 3.38 GPA and was a member of the women's basketball team at Franklin Pierce. Leedham, a three-time NE-10 Player of the Year, received her second National Player of the Year honors this past season. She is the all-time leading scorer in Division II and set the single season record for points scored in a season with 915 points. Leedham finished the year averaging 26.9 points per game, tops in Division II, and was among the conference leaders in rebounds (7.9 rpg), assists (4.38 apg) and was first in steals (4.21 spg). She is also a three-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference selection as well as the recipient of the inaugural NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for women's basketball.
Le Moyne College
Jake McAndrew (Oswego, N.Y.) is a biology major with a 3.72 GPA and was a member of the men's cross country team at Le Moyne. McAndrew served as team captain the previous two seasons and was a member of Le Moyne's SAAC program the past three years. He earned All-Northeast-10 honors in 2007 and NCAA Division II All-Region honors in 2007 and 2009. McAndrew is also a three-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference selection.
Christina Harrison (Jamesville, N.Y.) is a psychology major with a 3.58 GPA and was a member of the women's soccer team at Le Moyne. Harrison finished her senior season tied for the team lead in scoring with 24 total points after scoring nine goals and recording six assists. She finished her career ranked third all-time in program history in career points and goals. Harrison is a three-time All-Northeast-10 selection after earning Second Team honors this past season. She is also a two-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference honoree (2008 & 2009).
UMass Lowell
Ryan Richards (Holden, Mass.) is a chemistry major with a 3.86 GPA and was a member of the men's soccer team at UMass Lowell. This past season, Richards appeared in 15 games and played over 1,300 minutes in net for the River Hawks. He made 58 saves, had a save percentage of .699 and recorded a goals against average of 1.72. He is a three-time All-Northeast-10 selection after earning Third Team honors this past season. Richards made Dean's List all seven semesters and was recently presented the 2010 David Boutin Award given to the top overall male student-athlete at UMass Lowell.
Molly Clay (Rockport, Mass.) is a chemical engineering major with a 3.60 GPA and was a member of the field hockey team at UMass Lowell. Clay started in all 24 games this year, while scoring five goals and recording three assists for 13 points at the midfield position. She earned All-Northeast-10 honors for the third time in her career after being named to the second team. Clay helped lead the River Hawks back to the NCAA Division II National Championship game this year. She is also a four-time NFHCA All-Academic selection and has made the Dean's List five of seven semesters.
Merrimack College
Dylan Ellis (Gloucester, Mass.) is a business administration major with a 3.68 GPA and was a member of the baseball team at Merrimack. Ellis wrapped up his senior season ranked second all-time in program history in career innings pitched (215.1), strikeouts (185) and earned run average (3.05). This past season he started in ten games and worked 80.2 innings while striking out 71 batters and holding opponents to a .209 batting average finish with a 4-4 record. Ellis made Dean's List all eight semesters and was a finalist for the Scholar Athlete of the Year award at Merrimack.
Kelly Pasquantonio (Plainville, Mass.) is a sports medicine major with a 3.54 GPA and was a member of the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams at Merrimack. Pasquantonio started all 12 games this year for the field hockey team as the Warriors advanced to the NE-10 semifinals. She finished her senior season with four goals and one assist for nine points. In lacrosse, Pasquantonio earned All-Northeast-10 honors for the third straight season after finishing the year with 36 goals and 14 assists for 50 points. She made Dean's List all eight semesters and was the recipient of the David Rafferty Memorial Award which is given to a graduating senior for excellence in athletics and academics at Merrimack.
University of New Haven
Austin Michalski (Voorhees, N.Y.) is a nutrition and dietetics major with a 3.90 GPA and was a member of the men's volleyball team at New Haven. He served as SAAC President during the 2008-2009 academic year and was a member of the Nutrition and Dietetics Club from Spring 2008 through Spring 2010. Michalski made Dean's List seven semesters and was the recipient of New Haven's Outstanding Academic Achievement Award this year.
Kristine Lambracht (White House Station, N.J.) is a finance and accounting major with a 3.93 GPA and was a member of the women's cross country and lacrosse teams at New Haven. In her senior season, Lambracht scored ten goals and had one assist for 11 points, while grabbing 24 ground balls for the lacrosse team. She made the Dean's List all eight semesters and is a two-time Academic All-District selection. She was recently the recipient of the New Haven Faculty Distinguished Student-Athlete Award and the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.
Pace University
Callum Jones (Manchester, England) is a business management major with a 3.75 GPA and was a member of the men's basketball team at Pace. Jones appeared in 22 games this past season and made two starts. He averaged 14.3 minutes per game and scored a total of 84 points, while recording 43 rebounds and 16 assists. Jones is a three-time NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient and is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society. He made Dean's List five times while at Pace.
Taylor Losey (Bristol, Conn.) is a communication major with a 3.33 GPA and was a member of the women's basketball team at Pace. Losey was one of the team's top players this past season leading the Setters in scoring with 13.7 points per game and was second in rebounding with 4.9 boards per game. She finished her career tied for ninth all-time in program history with 1,239 career points and finished third all-time in three-pointers made with 172. Losey served as team captain the past two seasons and earned All-Northeast-10 First Team honors this year.
Saint Anselm College
Kevin DeBenedetto (Reading, Mass.) is an international relations with a certificate in Spanish major with a 3.49 GPA and was a member of the men's lacrosse team at Saint Anselm. DeBenedetto was named the NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year this past season and was an All-Northeast-10 First Team selection after leading the team with 72 ground balls and 54 cause turnovers. He is just the second First Team All-Northeast-10 selection in school history and was the first Defensive Player of the Year in the program's history. DeBenedetto is a four-year NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Erin Higgins (Mansfield, Mass.) is a biology major with a 3.47 GPA and was a member of the women's basketball team at Saint Anselm. Higgins finished her senior season starting all 27 games and averaging 35.3 minutes per contest. She averaged 6.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game for the Hawks. Higgins is a four-year member of the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and was named Saint Anselm's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Saint Michael's College
Jared Berry (Barrington, R.I.) is a psychology major with a 3.61 GPA and was a member of the men's soccer team at Saint Michael's. During his four year career at Saint Michael's, Berry tallied 13 goals and six assists for 32 points. During his senior season, he recorded a team-best six goals, four assists and 16 points. Berry is a two-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection and was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team and All-District First Team this year. Recently, Berry was awarded the Roger F. Keleher Memorial Award which is presented annually to the outstanding male scholar-athletes in Saint Michael's graduating class.
Katelyn Billings (Saint Albans, Vt.) is a chemistry major with a 3.95 GPA and was a member of the softball team at Saint Michael's. During her four year career, Billings played in 135 games and started 113 the last three seasons. The former All-Northeast-10 Third Team selection compiled 74 hits, 46 runs scored, 20 sacrifice hits and 17 stolen bases in her career. Billings is a two-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection and is also a two-time ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team honoree. She was recently presented the Roger F. Keleher Memorial Award which is presented annually to the outstanding female scholar-athletes in Saint Michael's graduating class.
The College of Saint Rose
Kevin Jackson (Schenectady, N.Y.) is a business major with a 3.37 GPA and was a member of the men's track & field team at Saint Rose. Jackson has earned All-Northeast-10 honors the past two seasons, as he finished second in the 110-meter hurdles at the NE-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships and also finished second during the indoor championship back in February in the 55-meter hurdles. During his senior season, Jackson picked up seven individual first place performances during the indoor season and three during the outdoor season. He owns six individual records indoors and holds the records for the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump for outdoors. Jackson is a two-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection.
Mary German (Canandaigua, N.Y.) is a communication major with a 3.48 GPA and was a member of the women's volleyball team at Saint Rose. German became the first player in school history to amass more than 2,000 digs in her career (2,154) and has also recorded 200 career aces and 130 career assists. The two-year captain earned All-Northeast-10 honors as a sophomore and was named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll during her junior and senior year.
Southern Connecticut State University
Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) is a marketing major with a 3.79 GPA and was a member of the baseball team at Southern Connecticut. Malen helped lead the Owls to their first Northeast-10 Regular Season title since 2005 and back to the NCAA Championship after a one year hiatus. He finished his senior season batting .315 with 28 runs scored, 53 hits, and 18 runs batted in. Malen has made Dean's List every semester at Southern Connecticut and is a Northeast-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and a CoSIDA All-District honoree.
Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) is a biology major with a 3.85 GPA and was a member of the women's cross country and track & field teams at Southern Connecticut. During her senior season, Brustolon was named the NE-10 Athlete of the Year in cross country as well as earning All-Region honors. She has been a NCAA qualifier multiple times throughout her career both in cross country and track & field. Brustolon was the recipient of the inaugural NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award for cross country and has been named to the conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll and Academic All-Conference teams multiple times.
Southern New Hampshire University
John Frey (Westminster, Colo.) is a business major with a 3.75 GPA and was a member of the men's ice hockey team at Southern New Hampshire. Frey is a two-year captain of the team and has compiled 33 goals, 41 assists for 74 points in 95 games over his four-year career. He was named Southern New Hampshire's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year during his sophomore season and is a three-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference selection.
Kristin Moore (Weymouth, Mass.) is a child development major with a 3.36 GPA and was a member of the women's soccer team at Southern New Hampshire. Moore served as team captain this past season and was a three-year starter on defense for the Penmen, appearing in 66 games over her career. She was a finalist for the Southern New Hampshire Female Sportsmanship Award (2009-10).
Stonehill College
Michael Mashkevich (Framingham, Mass.) is a marketing major with a 3.73 GPA and was a member of the men's tennis team at Stonehill. Mashkevich has earned All-Northeast-10 First Team honors at the number two singles position the past two seasons as well as earning second team honors at the number one doubles position as a senior. He helped lead the team to the NCAA tournament all four years of his career and to the Northeast-10 Regular Season and Tournament titles in 2009. He is currently a two-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection and has made the conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester. He was recently awarded the Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete Award by Stonehill which is given to the top senior scholar-athlete.
Jaclyn Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y.) is an accounting major with a 3.67 GPA and was a member of the women's lacrosse team at Stonehill. Craig has helped lead Stonehill to two NCAA Tournament bids (2007 & 2010), five NE-10 Championships, three regular season titles (2007-2009), and two tournament titles (2007 & 2008) throughout her four-year career. The former NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year is a four-time All-Northeast-10 selection after being named to the First Team for the third straight year this past season. Craig is currently a two-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection and has made the conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll all four years of her career. She was recently awarded the Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to the top senior scholar-athlete at Stonehill.
With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction of being the largest Division II conference in the country along with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II conference.
