Adelphi posts top point
total from
spring season to clinch prestigious award
FALMOUTH, Mass. – Adelphi University registered 177 total points to win the 2012-13 Northeast-10 Conference Presidents’ Cup, it was announced Monday night at the conference’s yearend banquet on Cape Cod.
It marks the first-ever Northeast-10 Presidents’ Cup for
Adelphi, which joined the Northeast-10 in 2009-10.
”This is a distinct honor and has been a goal of ours each
and every year since joining the Northeast-10,” said
Robert Hartwell, Adelphi Director of
Athletics and Assistant Vice President.

The Presidents' Cup is presented annually to signify overall athletic excellence in the Northeast-10 Conference. The honor is awarded to the institution that compiles the most cumulative points, based on finishes in the regular-season standings, from all of its programs competing in league championships.
Points for men's and women's cross country, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, and men's golf are awarded based on placement in those sports’ respective conference championships.
Adelphi, which participates in 20 of the 23 sports sponsored by the Northeast-10, totaled 177 points for the academic year, including a conference-best 74.5 points during the spring season.
“Our student-athletes had a very successful year and we
are always impressed with the high level of competition within the
conference year in and year out,” added Hartwell. “The
University, from the President on down, is extremely proud of this
accomplishment.”
The Panthers won the 2012 Northeast-10 Golf Championship, finished
first in the regular-season standings in softball, and tied for
first in both men’s and women’s lacrosse. They also
posted second-place finishes in women’s cross country and
volleyball back in the fall.
Adelphi sat in second place in the standings at the conclusion of
the fall season before falling to sixth at the end of the
winter.
Bentley University finished second with 171.5 points, while
Stonehill College finished third with 167 points. Stonehill had won
each of the last three Presidents’ Cup awards dating back to
the 2009-10 academic year.
The University of Massachusetts Lowell, which now departs for the
America East Conference, finished fourth (154.5 points), while the
University of New Haven placed fifth (150.5).
Southern Connecticut State University (146), American
International College (143), Merrimack College (141), Franklin
Pierce University (130) and Southern New Hampshire University (124)
rounded out the top-10 in the annual Presidents’ Cup
standings.
The Northeast-10 is an association of 16 NCAA Division II
colleges and universities located in New England and New York that
are committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic
opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year,
4,000 of those student-athletes compete in Conference championships
in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the
country. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within
the community, the Northeast-10 is proud of its comprehensive
program and the experience it provides
student-athletes.
