UMass Lowell Wins Fifth Straight Northeast-10 Championship

LOWELL, Mass. – Jill Tierney (Newburyport, MA) had a goal
and two assists as No. 2 UMass Lowell defeated No. 6 Bentley in the
Northeast-10 field hockey championship match Sunday afternoon at
Cushing Field.
The tournament championship is the fifth in a row for the River
Hawks, who improve to 18-2 on the year. The win also marked
UML’s 12th straight this season and Shannon Hlebichuk’s
99th career victory as head coach of the River Hawks.
Tierney led the way offensively for UML with a goal and two
assists, while Liz Day (North Andover, MA) had a goal and an assist
in the match. Jayne Vagenas (Harwich, MA), Michelle Harrington
(Rockport, MA) and Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) also scored for the
River Hawks.
After Bentley’s Haley Smith (Georgetown, MA) made it 1-0 in
favor of the Falcons in the 16th minute of play, UML scored five
unanswered goals starting with Day’s sixth tally of the year
at 24:11.
Tierney, who earned an assist on Day’s goal, picked up an
assist on Vagenas’ third tally of the season in the 31st
minute. Less than a minute later, Harrington chipped in with her
fourth goal of the season (31:18).
Tierney made it a 4-1 River Hawk lead before the half with her
seventh goal of the season with an assist from Day.
The River Hawks scored three goals in the final five minutes of
the first half to lead 4-1 at the half.
Ales capped the scoring with the lone goal of the second half, her
second of the season in the 53rd minute. Sasha Lovejoy (Kennebunk,
ME) had the assist.
Danielle Dodier (Kensington, NH) made two saves in 56 minutes of
action to earn her 17th win of the season. Freshman Amy Carbon
(Bellingham, MA) played the final 13:40 of the match and made one
save.
Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, MA) had 12 saves for Bentley, but took
the loss allowing five goals. Eleven of the 23 goals Sliney has
surrendered this season have come against UML.
The River Hawks out-shot the Falcons 22-5 in the match –
14-4 in the first half and 8-1 in the second. UML also held the
advantage in penalty corners, 13-5.
The River Hawks next take the field in the NCAA Division II field
hockey tournament. Their opponent will be determined on Monday at
4:00 p.m. during the NCAA Division II Field Hockey selection show.
