South Easton, Mass. – The Stonehill College field hockey team
is ranked number one in the first installment of the NCAA Division
II regional rankings. The rankings were released this afternoon by
the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Committee.
The Skyhawks, ranked fifth nationally, are among five Northeast-10
schools ranked in the North Region. The University of Massachusetts
Lowell is ranked second, followed by Bentley University, Merrimack
College and Adelphi University.
Shippensburg University, ranked number one in the nation, leads the
South Region with a perfect 11-0 record and are followed by
Bloomsburg University, East Stroudsburg University, Kutztown
University, Mercyhurst, Seton Hill and Bellarmine.
Stonehill (9-2, 3-0 NE-10) has won nine straight contests and has
outscored its opponents 33-6 in that span including three shutouts.
Senior Claire Hourihan (East Amherst,
N.Y.) leads the team and is tied for first in the
Northeast-10 with 12 goals scored. Junior goalkeeper
Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass.) is among the
conference leaders in a number of goalie stats including goals
against (10), goals against average (0.97) and save percentage
(.744).
UMass Lowell (10-1, 3-0 NE-10), ranked fourth nationally, are led
by juniors Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.)
and Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass.). Macy
currently is tied for first in the Northeast-10 with
Stonehill’s Hourihan in goals scored with 12, while Enaire
has recorded nine goals and has dished out three assists. The
Riverhawks have won five straight contests.
Ranked eighth nationally, Bentley (8-3, 3-1 NE-10) is currently
third in the North Region after winning seven of its last eight
games. Senior Courtney Bartlett (Brunswick,
Maine) and sophomore Stephanie Sideris
(Watertown, Mass.) lead the Falcons’ offense
with seven goals each.
Merrimack (8-5, 3-1 NE-10) found itself ranked nationally for the
first time this season as the Warriors are currently ninth among
Division II nationally. Merrimack is led by freshman duo
April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) and
Jen Otis (Penacook, N.H.). Daugherty
leads the Warrior offense with 10 goals and has dished out a
conference best 12 assists. Otis is second on the team with nine
goals and has recorded three assists. After starting the year 0-3,
Merrimack has won eight of ten.
Adelphi (7-4, 2-0 NE-10) is ranked fifth in the North Region and
has won four of its last five games. Out of those four victories,
three were shutouts as the Panthers outscored their opponents 12-1.
Adelphi is led by sophomore Julianne Gerbino (Port
Jefferson, N.Y.) who is currently ranked second in
the NE-10 with 11 goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Lucia
Vigliotti (Westbury, N.Y.) currently leads the
conference with four shutouts and is second with a .804 save
percentage. She has a goals against average of 1.16.
With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction
of being the largest Division II conference in the country along
with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide
athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest
such program of any Division II conference.
