South Easton, Mass. – The Stonehill College field hockey team
is ranked number one for the third straight week in the recent
installment of the NCAA Division II regional rankings. The rankings
were released this afternoon by the NCAA Division II Field Hockey
Committee.
The Skyhawks, ranked fourth nationally, are among six Northeast-10
schools ranked in the North Region. The University of Massachusetts
Lowell is ranked second, followed by Bentley University and
Merrimack College. Adelphi University is ranked fifth, while
Franklin Pierce University is sixth.
Bloomsburg University, ranked number one in the nation, leads the
South Region with a 14-1 record are followed in order by
Shippensburg University, East Stroudsburg University, Kutztown
University, Mercyhurst College and Millersville University.
Stonehill (12-3, 6-1 NE-10), ranked fourth nationally, has won 12
of its last 13 contests, including last night’s 3-1 victory
over UMass Lowell. Three different players scored for the Skyhawks,
including senior Claire Hourihan (East Amherst,
N.Y.) who is ranked second in the Northeast-10 with
17 goals. Junior goalkeeper Courtney Osier (South
Dennis, Mass.) didn’t face a single shot on
goal in the win. She currently leads the conference with a 1.12
goals against average. Stonehill will host Assumption College
tomorrow at 4 p.m.
Ranked fifth in Division II, UMass Lowell (12-3, 4-2 NE-10) will
travel to Saint Anselm College tomorrow afternoon for a 4 p.m.
contest. The River Hawks are led by Sammy Macy
(Tewksbury, Mass.) who leads the conference in
scoring with 19 goals. Macy was named this week’s NE-10
Player of the Week. Goalkeeper Amy Carbon (Bellingham,
Mass.) has recorded 43 saves for a .717 save
percentage this season to go along with a 1.58 goals against
average.
Bentley (11-3, 5-1 NE-10) increased its winning streak to five
games after last night’s 3-1 non-conference game versus
Assumption College. Seniors Allison St. Jean (Lebanon,
Maine) and Courtney Bartlett (Brunswick,
Maine) each scored second-half goals to secure the
victory. It was Bartlett’s team-leading 11th goal of the
year, while St. Jean notched her sixth goal of the season. The
seventh ranked Falcons will face Saint Michael’s College
tomorrow afternoon on the road.
Merrimack (10-6, 5-2 NE-10) won its second straight game last night
with a 1-0 shutout victory over Saint Michael’s. Freshman
Jen Otis (Penacook, N.H.) scored the
game-winning goal with just under 15 minutes to play in regulation.
The goal marked her 13th score this season. Fellow freshman
April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) has
scored 10 goals while dishing out a team-high 12 assists.
Goalkeeper Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee,
Mass.) made 10 saves in the win against the Purple
Knights and improved her goals against average to 2.72 with the
shutout victory. Merrimack will host Adelphi on Sunday for a 1 p.m.
contest.
Adelphi (9-5, 4-1 NE-10) is ranked fifth in the North Region after
winning two straight games, including last night’s 4-3
victory over Southern Connecticut State University.
Natasha Pedzik (Patchogue, N.Y.) led the
way with two goals as she recorded her fifth and sixth goal of the
season. Sophomore Julianne Gerbino (Port Jefferson,
N.Y.) leads the team in scoring with 13 goals and
three assists for 29 points. The Panthers will travel to
Springfield, Mass. tomorrow night to face American International
for a 7 p.m. contest.
Franklin Pierce (7-7, 3-3 NE-10) will look to rebound after falling
short to Adelphi, 1-0, in over-time this past Saturday. Prior to
that, the Ravens had won their previous three games. Sophomores
Danielle Dolan (West Brookfield, Mass.)
and Tia Levins (Manchester, Maine) lead
the team with four goals scored each. The Ravens will travel to
Southern Connecticut tomorrow for a 7 p.m. contest.
With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction
of being the largest Division II conference in the country along
with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide
athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest
such program of any Division II conference.
