South Easton, Mass. – The Stonehill College field hockey team
is ranked number one for the fourth straight week in the recent
installment of the NCAA Division II regional rankings. The rankings
were released yesterday by the NCAA Division II Field Hockey
Committee.
The Skyhawks are ranked third in the nation and are among five
Northeast-10 schools ranked in the North Region. The University of
Massachusetts Lowell is ranked second, followed by Bentley
University in third, Merrimack College fourth, while Adelphi
University is ranked fifth.
Bloomsburg University, ranked number one in the nation, leads the
South Region with a 16-1 record is followed in order by
Shippensburg University, East Stroudsburg University, Kutztown
University, Millersville University, Mercyhurst College, and
Bellarmine University.
Stonehill (15-3, 8-1 NE-10), ranked third nationally, has won five
of its last six contests, including last night’s 1-0 victory
over Merrimack College. Senior Claire Hourihan (East
Amherst, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for the Skyhawks
and is ranked second in the Northeast-10 with 19 goals. Junior
goalkeeper Courtney Osier (South Dennis,
Mass.) had to make two saves in the win and currently
leads the conference with a 0.98 goals against average. Stonehill
will travel to Southern Connecticut, on Saturday, for a 1 p.m.
contest.
Bentley (13-4, 7-2 NE-10), ranked second in the region, is coming
of a 3-2 setback against UMass-Lowell last night. Seniors
Allison St. Jean (Lebanon, Maine) and
Abbie DeMusis (Guilford, Conn.) each
scored a goal against the River Hawks. Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, Mass.) made four
saves in the contest. The Falcons will host American International
College tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
Ranked fifth in Division II, UMass Lowell (15-3, 7-2 NE-10)
defeated Bentley University yesterday, 3-2. Junior
Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass.) scored two
of the three goals for the River Hawks. Junior goalkeeper
Amy Carbon (Bellingham, Mass.) made three
saves last night and has recorded 51 saves for a .708 save
percentage this season, to go along with a 1.60 goals against
average. UMass-Lowell will be on the road at Adelphi University on
Saturday at 12 p.m.
Merrimack (11-7, 6-3 NE-10), ranked eighth nationally, is coming
off a 1-0 setback against Stonehill yesterday. Freshmen
Jen Otis (Penacook, N.H.) and
April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) are
leading the offense for the Warriors this season with 32 points
each. Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Week, freshman
Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) made
eleven saves in the loss against the Skyhawks and improved her
conference best save percentage to .795. Merrimack travels to Saint
Anselm on Saturday for a 12 p.m. match.
Adelphi (11-7, 6-3 NE-10) is ranked fifth in the North Region. The
Panthers defeated Assumption College yesterday, 3-1. Three
different players scored for Adelphi, including sophomore
Julianne Gerbino (Port Jefferson, N.Y.)
who leads the team in scoring with 16 goals and three assists for
35 points. Sophomore goalkeeperLucia Vigliotti
(Westbury, N.Y.) ranks second in the conference in
goals against average (1.40) and save percentage (.783). The
Panthers will host UMass-Lowell at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction
of being the largest Division II conference in the country along
with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide
athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest
such program of any Division II conference.
