UMass Lowell and Merrimack Advance to NE-10 Semifinals

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

South Easton, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Lowell defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 4-1, to advance to the NE-10 field hockey semifinals. An hour later, Merrimack College joined them as the Warriors defeated Adelphi University, 2-1 in quarterfinal action.

In the first quarterfinal of the afternoon, third seeded UMass Lowell took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when senior Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal off a rebound. The score remained 1-0 entering the second half, however that quickly changed as UMass Lowell piled on three additional goals in a ten minute span.  Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass.) scored in the early minutes of the half followed by Sammy Macy's (Tewksbury, Mass.) 23rd goal of the season.  Enaire would add another goal minutes later to give UMass Lowell a 4-0 lead.

Southern Connecticut cut the lead to 4-1 when Kelly Ann McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) scored her 10th goal of the season in the 56th minnute.

JuniorLauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) made a game-high 13 saves in goal for the Owls.

With the victory, UMass Lowell will advance to the semifinal round and face defending champion, Bentley University, 2 p.m. on Saturday.

In the other quarterfinal contest, Merrimack defeated Adelphi for the third time this season with a 2-1 victory to advance to the Northeast-10 semifinals for the first time in team history.  Freshman April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Sarah Salatto (Guilford, Conn.) scored the game's eventual game-winning goal seven minutes into the second half off a rebound.  Adelphi cut the score in half late in the second half when Emilee Rahner (Setauket, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season.

Despite the comeback, the Warriors held off the Adelphi offense and conserved the 2-1 victory.  Freshman Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) made four saves in goal for Merrimack, while her counterpart Lucia Vigliotti (Westbury, N.Y.) recorded eight saves for the Panthers.

Merrimack will face top seed and host of the final four, Stonehill College in the semifinals at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
