NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University
men’s cross country and track and field coach Jack Maloney
has announced his retirement from both posts, effective June 1,
2009. Maloney enjoyed an affiliation with the university that
spanned more than 25 years. He served as head coach for the past 11
seasons and steps down in the midst of a streak in which the Owls
have claimed 14 consecutive Northeast-10 Conference track and field
championships – seven indoors and seven outdoors.
“Jack Maloney has left an indelible mark on our men’s
cross country and track and field programs over nearly three
decades of service to Southern Connecticut State University,”
said Director of Athletics Patricia D. Nicol. “He has
elevated the program into one of the best in the nation over that
time. The running streak of 14 consecutive conference
championships, in one sport, at any level, is a tremendous
accomplishment. I wish Jack and his wife, Valerie, all the best in
retirement.”
After serving as an assistant coach at SCSU for 17 seasons, Maloney
succeeded Wil Wright in 1998 as head coach. Since then, he has been
tabbed as both Northeast Region Coach of the Year and Northeast-10
Conference Coach of the Year on 12 occasions.
He coached a total of 76 Owls’ All-Americans, including 60 as
head coach. Furthermore, 16 school records were broken during
Maloney’s tenure as head coach.
Over the course of the past 10 years, the Owls have placed in the
top-10 at the New England Championships a total of 14 times (seven
times indoor and seven times outdoor), including five top-three
finishes at the Indoor Championships.
The 2008-09 season was another tremendously successful campaign for
the Owls. During the cross country season, the team was nationally
ranked throughout the entire season and finished third at the NCAA
Regionals.
The Owls then maintained their reign of dominance during track
season, as they won both the Northeast-10 Indoor and Outdoor Track
and Field Championships. Maloney was named as Conference Coach of
the Year during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, while also
taking home United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year accolades during
both campaigns.
On the team front, the Owls placed as high as 10th at the NCAA
Championships under Maloney – with that coming outdoors in
2001.
During his time as an assistant coach, Maloney coached 16
All-Americans was named the Division II New England Coach of the
Year in 1988. He remains the only coach ever selected to that honor
while in an assistant coach capacity.
