NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Shawn Green has been named head
men’s cross country/track and field coach at Southern
Connecticut State University. The announcement was made earlier
today by Director of Athletics Patricia Nicol. Green joins the Owls
with more than a decade of experience as a coach and
student-athlete at four Division I programs – Quinnipiac
University, the University of New Hampshire, Michigan State
University and Georgia State University. He spent the last nine
years building Quinnipiac’s men’s and women’s
programs into two of the best in the Northeast.
“Shawn Green has a tremendous record of developing
student-athletes who excel in the classroom, in the community and
within the athletic realm,” said Nicol. “He is a highly
regarded member of the track and field community who will certainly
carry on the outstanding tradition of our program. We are thrilled
to have Shawn, his wife Wendy, and their children, Dawson and
Cassidy, as a part of the Southern Connecticut State University
community.”
Green had served as head men’s and women’s cross
country/track and field coach at Quinnipiac since July, 2000.
During that span, he transformed the cross country programs into a
juggernaut, as evidenced by four consecutive Northeast Conference
women’s cross country titles (2005-08) and four titles in
five years on the men’s side (2004, 2006-08).
A three-time Northeast Conference Women’s Cross Country Coach
of the Year, Green also guided the women’s cross country
squad to the 2007 New England Championship.
In his nine years at Quinnipiac, Green coached 32 individual
Northeast Conference champions and nine NEC champion relay teams.
He also coached the Bobcats’ first female Division I
All-American in any sport, Katie Gwyther.
The academic accomplishments of Green’s squads were equally
as impressive. His squads were recognized with Academic
All-American Team honors by the United States Track and Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association on 26 occasions (out of a
possible 27) over the past nine years. The 2004 men’s track
and field and 2007 women’s track and field teams posted the
second-highest team grade point average of any Division I program
in the nation.
On the individual front, Green coached five USTFCCCA Academic
All-Americans. The women’s indoor and outdoor track teams
were also recognized with the Northeast Conference Institutional
Academic Award in 2007 and 2008. The men’s and women’s
cross country teams also captured the NEC Sportsmanship Award in
2008.
Prior to joining the Quinnipiac staff, Green served as a volunteer
assistant coach at Georgia State University and Lansing (Mich.)
Community College.
As a student-athlete, he competed for both the University of New
Hampshire and Michigan State University. Green was a captain at UNH
and led the Wildcats to a pair of North Atlantic Conference titles.
He completed his track and field eligibility at Michigan State.
Green is a former Vice President of the New England Women’s
Intercollegiate Cross Country/Track and Field Association and Chair
of the Northeast Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross
Country Coaches Committee. He has also served on the USTFCCCA Cross
Country Executive Committee.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular, cellular and
developmental biology from the University of New Hampshire and a
master’s degree in exercise physiology from Michigan State
University.
