Stonehill College freshman track & field athlete Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass.) and the University of New Haven junior athlete Shannon Gagne (Meriden, Conn.) were named the 2009-2010 Northeast-10 Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the year in a vote by the conference’s head coaches.

In addition, American International College’s Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) and Stonehill’s Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I.) were selected the 2009-2010 Freshmen of the Year. The awards were announced Thursday night at the Northeast-10 Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.

Coach of the Year accolades went out to American International’s Leo Mayo as the men’s track & field Coach o the Year, while the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Gary Gardner was honored as the women’s indoor track & field Coach of the Year.

Thomas was named the most valuable athlete at the Northeast-10 Championships Thursday night after breaking the conference meet record in the 55-meter hurdles (7.51) and finished second in the high jump with a leap of 7’ 0.25”. Thomas has already qualified for the NCAA Championship with a leap of 7’1.00” he made earlier in the season. He also automatically qualified in the 55-meter hurdles.

Gagne was named the NE-10 championship’s most valuable athlete after collecting four first-place finishes including the 55-meter dash (7.22), 400-meters (56.56), 200-meters (25.36) and the long jump (18’ 4.25”). Gagne currently ranks number one in the Northeast-10 this season in all four events as well as the top 20 in all of Division II. She has also either provisionally or automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in all four events.

James automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship after clearing 7’ 1.50” in the high jump at the Northeast-10 Championship. His winning jump bettered his previous mark of 7’ 0.25 which he has cleared twice this season. James has also recorded a jump of 44’ 10.75” in the triple jump this season which is the top mark by a freshman in the Northeast-10 this season.

Carmone, the NE-10 Cross Country Freshman of the Year, continues to add to her freshman resume as she won the 3000 meters event at the Northeast-10 Championships with a winning time of 10:34.46. At the Boston Indoor Games she recorded the second-best time in the NE-10 this season in the 3,000-meters with a time of 10:12.95. She was also part of the winning 4x800 relay team that finished with a time of 9:48.43 at the NE-10 Championship.

With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction of being the largest Division II conference in the country along with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II conference.
